Even if they did make that minimal editorial effort, the books would still not be within a million miles of "definitive reprint collections for the hardcore comics fan", so I don't really see the relevance of that point. But if they are "quickly packaged books, done as cheaply as possible" then a response indicating that that's what they seem like is surely appropriate?

I think it's questionable that they've been waiting years for books specifically like these (at least the W+C and Girls one), but I'm looking forward to seeing what the Thomson ones contain.
I didn't say specifically these ones. Like these. Reprints of classic material.

Of course it's appropriate and reasonable for you to express your opinions on the books. All I'm doing is offering a reason why the books aren't more in-depth. It just sounds like you're criticising the books for not being something they were never intended to be. I just think it's a nice surprise that these books (and the Thomson ones) are happening at all. I doubt the choice of reprint will appeal to me much personally as I'm not that nostalgic for 1970s stuff, but I'm pleased to see they've been published.

OK so it's not technically a comic but certainly comic related, I decided to go for a "I'm buying it regardless" approach and purchased the Dandy Free Gift "Whirlybird" on ebay (given away in issue 990, 1961).

It was good timing to turn up as I had just received a tax rebate! Didn't think it would go over £200.00 mind, however, I felt that I would regret it if I didn't purchase it as I do not think I have seen another one on sale online during all the time that I have been collecting.

Trouble is when it arrives, I will be really tempted to give a go and see if it works!

The" BEST OF "books are often disappointing unless whoever compiled them as the same taste as you. When I bought the best of Commando book I was disappointed with the stories considering they had such a huge selection to choose from. Similarly I see a lot of fiction and non-fiction books on sale and wonder what prompted anyone to print them. The thing about the Sainsbury books whether you like them or not is the fact that they will gain new comic readers and that can only be a good thing.

Bought this week's Beano, the Beano Christmas Special (which is similar to the Summer Activity Special) and the Simpsons Winter Bumper Pack, which comprises Simpsons Comics #220 and Bart & Co #2 and #3.

Just bought the Jeff Hawke books off Ebay. I must admit that the Brian Bolland covers were an added bonus.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

There is another big Sainsburys not all that far from Wimbledon. It's just off the A3 going in the direction of Kingston. If you ignore the right turn for Roehampton you will find it signposted on the left not that much further along the road. It's probably worth a phone call first though if you are only going for the books.

just purchased 4 Tarzan Weekly comics from 1977. Three of them cost me a pound each but the last in the series cost me £13.49. Had I bid on this last issue on its own, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near. But, considering I had secured three issues for a pound each, I pushed out the boat. Only three more issues to complete the set :)

Small carboot today nevertheless searched for comic related material and found the following--

PENGUIN DREAMS and stranger things by Berke Breathed ( yes weird name) this seemed to be a collection of strips taken from some magazine or other. Paid £1

Marvel hardback POWER MAN (no! I Don't know who he his) the main thing that decided me on buying this was the fact that at least half of the pages were in the old style drawing and colouring ,the rest of the book containing avenger LUKE CAGE this was in the newer style. Paid £1

Disney's FINDING NEMO hardback comicbook .These Disney comicbooks are commonplace at the moment but will be probably sort after in the future. At an asking price of ten pence I thought I might as well pick it up.

Came to a stall with a slim Classics from Beano and Dandy comic which the lady wanted a £1 against some football mags where she only wanted 50p.She obviously knew what she was selling.By this time however I had decided not to buy anymore so left it there for someone else.

Yesterday I received two full years of Tracy (1982 and 1983) that I had won in Phil Shrimpton's recent auction. Almost all in near mint condition too. I actually needed 35 issues from 1982 and 22 from 1983, but to get them I obviously ended up with quite a few I already had. I'm expecting two more this week from another eBayer so I will then only need sixteen issues for the complete run, of which only eight are really crucial as with those I will know when every serial starts and finishes.

Picked up Hotspur dated 18.2.1956 from The Junk Shop in Greenwich - it was among a pile of Private Eyes which is why I missed it previously. Date is a week before I was born.

Was the Roy of the Rovers book the current autobiography or a 'best of' style annual? Thanks.
