What comics did you buy today?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
At the mart in Edinburgh today, I found #1 of the Phantom from Hermes Press, written by Peter David. With any luck they will have treated the legend with respect, unlike Dynamite. Putting off reading it till last. Also #1 of Buck Rogers from Hermes and by Howard Chaykin.
#1Of Amazing and Fantastic Tales, the small press comic with a lot of Jim Alexander's stuff. Entertaining.
I also found an old Jademan comic and couldn't resist it.
Watching colcool007 salivating over some 2000ADs and those old landscape British Marvel reprints was highly amusing. But he sloped off for a curry before I could ask him for a swatch at Phoenix's book. And he wasn't back by the time I got back from the pub.

I didn't salivate over the 2000ADs as I have them already. But I did enjoy looking through the lucky boxes and picking up a few Origin stories. And I bought the most US comics that I have ever bought in 8 years!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I bought Beano annual 2015 from local Tesco at half price. No sign of Dandy annual, however. Was pleased to see that Biffo the Bear is still alive.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Today went to Melton Sunday market/carboot and bought back.
CHATTERBOX annual 1899 paid £1
I was not buying or collecting comics in the 70s/80s so was not familiar with what was being produced at that time, some of the following ones that I have bought I had not heard of before .
SUPER MAGS comic featuring Dennis the menace
HOOT No3
No4
No6
SPIKE No1
No2
No3
No6
No15
No17
No20
SCREAM! No6
No10
The stallholder kept mentioning Ebay and that was worrying ,but I was happy in the end that he only wanted £3.50p for the lot.

Delighted to get a really terrific copy of Alan Class's Creepy Worlds No. 32, which reprints the first issue of Fantastic Four from 1961. Does anyone know what date the British reprint came out?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Probably circa June 1965, I think.babington wrote:Delighted to get a really terrific copy of Alan Class's Creepy Worlds No. 32, which reprints the first issue of Fantastic Four from 1961. Does anyone know what date the British reprint came out?

Just won an Ebay lot of 46 post-The Crunch merger Hotspurs so we are looking at circa 1980/81. And getting them for less than a tenner including P&P is never bad!
Here's a picture of them

At the Glasgow mart yesterday - the BHP one - I bought a few issues of Hornet with Captain hornet cover featured, some recent Archie comics, incl. a couple of the alternate covers, a 1967 issue of Captain Hero (Jughead) and from Waterstones, the Batmanga vol. 1, being a reprint of the 1966 Japanese Batman comics. A beautiful book.

I was tempted to bid on those and his other lots but they looked a bit creased and tanned so didn't bother. (They might be whiter in reality of course.) I bought a year's run of The Wizard comic last week though, which were in excellent condition. I never really followed DC Thomson's story papers/comics so it's all new to me. A denser, more considered style of writing than the brash and breezy IPC adventure style I think.colcool007 wrote:Just won an Ebay lot of 46 post-The Crunch merger Hotspurs so we are looking at circa 1980/81. Did you get it yet? If not, get to Sainsbury's ASAP! They seem to have done their Boxing Day markdowns three weeks early, so it's only a quid. I hope this isn't a sign of poor sales.geoff42 wrote:I bought Beano annual 2015 from local Tesco at half price. No sign of Dandy annual, however. Re: What comics did you buy today?
Glad you didn't as I had a low max bid! I loved The Crunch and I was gutted when it was dropped. I had always wanted to see how the stories were taken forward and I missed an auction where it was the complete Crunch and all the Hotspurs until the Crunch masthead was dropped. And that went for £20 a few years ago. And I regretted not getting that batch, so this bid make up for that missed item.Lew Stringer wrote:I was tempted to bid on those and his other lots but they looked a bit creased and tanned so didn't bother. I did say a while back I wasn't going to buy any more old comics because I had all the ones I wanted. But then a voice inside my head said "You never really gave the DC Thomson adventure comics a chance when you were a kid" so I couldn't resist the temptation of a full year of Wizards, and a handful of Warlords. And I've just bought five issues of Rover too, just because I liked the covers.
I had every issue of Spike and most issues of Buddy when they were published but I never kept them. Before that, the only DCT adventure comic I had regularly was The Hotspur from 1969 to about 1973, but didn't keep those either. I just didn't feel I'd ever re-read them, so I've no regrets about getting rid. (I did buy a couple of 1969 Hotspurs recently to see if re-reading them would engage me but it didn't.)
