What comics did you buy today?

I got Dennis the Menace and Gnasher's Epic! Magazine today.

To me it is just Epic! Magazine with the addition of Dennis and Gnasher just being an after thought. A far cry from their megazine with their missions (which is now in The Beano).

If I was in charge, I would have just called it Dennis the Menace and Gnasher and have a few D&G based strips including reprints plus the missions plus the various feature pages that is in Epic.

Anyway, very bland in my book.

I stopped buying it when it changed from Megazine to Epic. It's a clear attempt at copying Toxic, which they've tried at least twice before (Dandy Xtreme and Beano Max - the fact these formats aren't still around should tell you something). I wonder how Epic's sales are doing?

I know we'd all prefer comics, fans and pros alike, but it makes sense for Thomsons to try and get a piece of the market for that sort of magazine. Toxic does well, and presumably so does Mega as it's still around, so it wouldn't be good business for DCT not to compete. It's simply healthy rivalry between publishers, just like they did when comics were more popular.

The pages are evenly tanned not white but this was a definite book for my collection and I was not going to let it slip away ,paid £2

I'm not going to dispute you, Lew as what you say make sense regarding the marketplace.

My gripe is that DCT has made the comic so generic. To me Epic! is just a compilation of unrelated features and quizzes with the D&G name (and two token strips) bunged on so that they can call it a Dennis & Gnasher mag. That is why I called it bland.

I would have at least personalised the features so that D&G were presenting them. For example: With the Star Wars feature, I would have had Dennis being enthusiastic about the film saying that he was trying to get his dad to take him or something on those lines. Trying to get the reader involved.

With very little effort, the comic (IMO) could be better.

Not a comic but a cartoon booklet CARRY ON YOMPING!a series of cartoons of the Falklands conflict by UK servicemen.I thought that it must be of some historical interest and added it to my collection.Paid 75p at the charity shop.Visiting all these charity shops and book shops involves a lot of walking maybe I should settle for Ebay.

Abacus, I'd keep walking and do eBay. Spread that comic catching net far and wide and still keep fit. Speaking of eBay I've just received issues 1 and 3 of Kobra - the German version of Vulcan. Kobra started with the same edition as the Scottish Vulcan plus the same free gifts but due to the odd method of using the week published as the basis for numbering the comic they were actually marked as Nr.7 and Nr.9. Issue 53 would then be issue Nr.1 again. (£6.34 for the two issues).

Yesterday, I received a complete year of Beano 1977 in very good nick... only bug bear is that most have a number on the back cover. Seems I will be very busy with my trusty ink eraser for the next day or two. Otherwise, a very good buy. Brings back long lost memories... sigh.

Issues 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of DoodleBug, an independent comic from Newcastle, 1987-1988. Some fun, low-brow laughs in there!

Also, both issues of Toxic Pie, a Scottish Viz-like comic from 1996, featuring Dave Alexander of Electric Soup fame, and Alex Ronald, of 2000AD.

I bought a 1950 Black Bob Book, any idea of its value very little information about it online.

RE: Black Bob annuals on eBay go for between £5 and £20 typically, so the average would be about £12.

However, the 1950 annual is the first, and so it is more desirable. Compal auctions sold one in VG+ for £93 in Summer 2010 and previous sales for fine copies were for about £150. Phil Comics sold a G/VG for £72 in 2007 and a fine minus for £114 in 2006. Phil sold a VG/F for £235 in 2004. So we have, approximately:

Fine - £150
VG - £90
G/VG - £70
G - £20

Contest of Champions II (Marvel)
All Access (DC/Marvel)
Unlimited Access (Marvel/DC)

With the last two are quite unique as they feature a character which belongs jointly to DC Comics and Marvel.
