The slipper was used extensively in the Davey Law period [early 50s-1970] however after new Dennis artist Dave Sutherland came into the fray, the slipper endings were noticably fewer, certainly much less savage--and consequently much less funnier-----from this point on.

I am sorry I can't pinpoint when the Fearsome Slipper was totally abandoned, though: I suspect it was dropped quietly, to avoid any fuss.

In the weekly comic itself, one of the last uses of the slipper was in issue 2385 (2nd April 1988), as seen here: http://comicsuk.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 988#p49604. By this point, however, it wasn't a regular occurrence.

The Dennis the Menace annuals reprinted stories that were generally around 11-12 years old, meaning that the slippers continued to appear in these annuals well into the 1990s, but very few of these strips actually contained Dennis or anyone else being whacked "on screen" so to speak, even if it was perfectly clear that it was going to happen!

One of the last ever uses of the slipper in a Dennis the Menace story was in the Beano Comic Library 301 (October 1994/1), "The Compleat Menace", which ends with Dennis getting whacked with a slipper on stage.

wow that's some great information thanks a lot for the effort
I knew the slipper was being faded out from 1983 onwards with as you say much of the action happening off stage but I did not realise it was shown late as 1988 in the Beano and 94 in the comic library
unless someone knows of an even later appearance :?:
