I've been meaning to do that. I have about thirty Alan Class Creepy Worlds and noticed they had a few cover images missing of which I have some. Here's a particularly striking one which looks to be from a Charlton comic,

A copy of Whizzer and Chips was on view in last night's episode of The Kennedys (another 1970s-set sitcom).

Frankie Abbott (David Barry) enjoys War Picture Library No. 476 in the 'Student Princess' episode of Please Sir! originally broadcast on 13 December 1968.

I wonder if that Whizzer & Chips is the one given away with the Guardian a few years back judging by the non-serated page edges?

It isn't - here are the equivalent pages from the Guardian facsimile...

I agree that the W&C in The Kennedys looks a bit odd - at first I thought it was a late 80's issue, but I think that the page opposite the Chips cover features Boney, a strip which I understand transferred from IPC's Knockout to W&C in 1973 and I don't think it lasted very long. Maybe the copy in the TV show is an issue reconstructed from scans - Wikipedia suggests Boney was a Chip-ite and if so he's in the wrong part of the comic as seen on TV.

Boney was in Whizzer and lasted at least until the issue dated 8th February 1975 which is the comic featured in The Kennedys.

Here's the cover and the relevant pages seen in the screencaps.

I think Joker was another former Knockout character.

Great work in identifying the issue in question Robbie! (and thanks for clarifying that Boney was a Whizz-kid).

If anyone has the 30 June 1973 issue of Whizzer and Chips (which is cited on the above link), check it please. It would appear that Boney is a turncoat. Started out in Chips and moved to Whizzer later, by the looks of it.

The closest issue I've seen is the 22nd September and Boney is in Whizzer by then so if he was in Chips then it didn't last long.

A couple of shots from the Frankie Howerd film A Touch of the Sun (1956).

Frankie's character is, for contractual reasons, unable to resign from his job as a hotel porter after inheriting a large amount of money (£10,000!). He therefore sets about upsetting the guests in order to get the sack. One of Frankie's acts of rebellion sees an obnoxious American kid receive The Church Times instead of the comic he requested, while the Bishop is surprised to find a copy of Superman with his breakfast.

Another episode of The Kennedys (entitled 'Vikings'), and more comics on screen. I strongly suspect this is also another case of a cover that has been mocked-up to suit the requirements of the plot.

Not sure whether this Oh Boy! cover is genuine or not...

Image

...but I very much doubt this Liberace page ever appeared in Oh Boy!

Yes, Look-In wouldn't have had a cover headline like that. It wasn't a gossip mag for girls.
