Good No.1 Comic Covers

It has to be TV21 Number 1 published in 1965 (with that lovely device of one hundred years in the future!). Why you ask?
1) Well, it was my older brother's and contraband is always more exciting!
2) It didn't have cartoons on the front like most of that reading considered OK for little 7 year olds,
3) and had a wonderful colour - that's COLOUR - photo of Stingray. Remember this was in the days of 2 TV channels in black and white!
4) "Steve Zodiac dead?" - how daring is that for a number one!
5) A free CODE BOOK!!!!
6) And THEN I opened it up!!!!..........But that's beyond this thread

In the days of b/w tv and with most British comics in b/w or red and blue TV 21 was FAB this was the first time I as a 10 year old saw stingray etc in colour , I would say it's the best ever comic front page of the 60s and would be hard to beat in any decade

My biggest gripe with the cover of 2000AD #1 was that when you removed the space spinner there was literally nothing under it but some big blue circles.

Even as a kid I can remember complaining to my dad that they could at least have had some art under it, could have been anything! A strip, a Kool pic, ANYTHING!!!

Biggest waste of real estate on a #1 cover ever!!!

One of my favourites was the 1950s era Eagle comic which had a mock up newspaper cover.I used to have the comic delivered and felt quite grown up to have a comic looking like my parents newspaper.

But on that subject I bet there's a fair few mock up newspaper type covers on comics...

The Ant wars 2000AD one immediately springs to mind.

I cannot recall any particular No1 comic cover that stood out apart from one or two already mentioned.Most new comics used to be well advertised and each one eagerly anticipated by me.Before my time in the 30s there was a large size glossy children's magazine called Modern Wonder 2 examples of which can be seen in the comics UK gallery [ the No1 not being one of the better examples].I have a few of these which I have bought over the years and a lot of the covers consist of outstanding art which alone makes the magazine worth buying.

It's worth pointing out that this is a learning magazine and doesn't contain comic strips apart from later issues that had flash gordon on the back page.This magazine is a similar size to the original Eagle comic and with the cut away drawings must have influenced the thinking of those that created the Eagle comic.

The Crunch had a great cover which still grabs you today.

I thought The Crunch was a great comic and was sad that it only lasted for 54 issues. It deserved better.

I def remember having the third issue with the skull badge.

Keep your eye on them on Ebay as for some reason they aren't really expensive sometimes. I bought the complete set of 54 last October for less than £30 including postage! I'm reading them now and am up to #42......loving it!

Just noticed that 47 issues with a 19 Hotspur added went for less than £30 last weekend.

To me, The Crunch was DCT's best action comic. My other regret apart from its early demise was that there were no annuals or specials.
