Hi folks
It is awfully hot on the European continent.
Yet i just bought a copy of "Walt Disney's Weekly".
It was the ill fated sequel to the UK "Mickey Mouse"mag.
And it is supposed to contain Peter Pan.
Probably "Peter Pan and Hook the Crook".
We will wait and see.
Best wishes, Johan

Hi folks
I have a question.
When i was a little boy it was hard to share anything with my sister who was over 11 years older than me.
We shared however a comic strip about Princess Anita, made by Bill Mainwaring.
The Dutch comic book was intended for boys and girls.
Can anyone provide me any information?
I have not the faintest clue.
Best wishes, Johan

Hi Actually i found someone who knew something about Princess Anita on this site; felnymike
But i am unable to contact him.
As a historian ( i have a degree ( i suspect the Anita stories are based on pre World War One Central Europe.
Either one of the smaller German principalities or one of the Balkan monarchies, Elinor Glyn style. Or Graustark or the Prisoner of Zenda.
Maybe even on the AustroHungarian Empire but that was huge!
Best, Johan

Anita originally appeared in School Friend during the 1950s - I'll have to see if I've got any examples.

Thank you very much Phil.
Using School Friend i even found a sample.
But i did not want to spoil your fun. The honour belongs to you.
I read Princess Anita was published in the comic for girls School Friend 1954 to 1958 as well in later annuals. But it is not verified.
Nevertheless, the Dutch "Sjors" mag in which we read Anita was a "coed" comic, for both boys and girls. Rather British, though.
Anita was a Ruritarian type heroine, I have the "Prisoner of Zelda" and one of its sequels as well as "Graustark" and a couple of E.R.Burroughs books in the same vein .
A couple of days ago i bought on a streetmarket two Dutch "Sjors" annuals of the sixties featuring Anita. That is why it rekindled my interest.
Thanks again & best, Johan

Funnily enough Bill Mainwaring later drew a similar strip called Schoolgirl Princess/Sara's Kingdom for Sally and then Tammy. This featured a British schoolgirl who became the Princess of a remote Himalayan kingdom and seemed to be a deliberate attempt to update some of the Ruritanian elements of Princess Anita. Here's the first episode from 1969.

Wow, that is a strange turn of events.
Unfortunately the Himalayan kingdoms of Sikkim and Nepal passed away, the last with a bang. Only the kingdom of Bhutan is left.
You can see sixties modern is not modern anymore.
One of the appeals of the Princess Anita stories is that it reminded me of Austria-Hungary and its neighbours.
Because i studied a kind of law, minority law, that originates tn the Danube monarchy.
But i digress.
Thanks and i will try to post the scan i found. Best, J.

Here's a nice Princess Anita episode from 1955 in which her habit of secretly disguising herself as a peasant girl is about to have disastrous consequences - and the Ruritanian parallels become even more apparent!

Wow, what a great surprise.
If i am not mistaken Rudolph turns out to be a foundling and a prince of a neighbouring country.
And her future fiancé.
But that is in a later story.
For this storyline is unfamiliar to me.
I have most of the later stories in the Dutch "Sjors" for it would be impossible to obtain the British originals.
Regretfully they are stored in my garage..
Do not forget the the author Elinor Glyn who worked on the romantic side of the Balkan fantasies.
And influenced British born Queen Marie of Romania who was anything but a model person..
Thank you so much and best wishes, Johan

Hi Been away for some time. Despite an illness i bought tons of interesting stuff.
Most intriguing was a Brit Peter Pan comic , published by Purnell in 1953. It has the "Captain Hook vs. Peter Pan" comic tale.
However, it has nearly the same cover as the World comic book with the movie story, also published in 1953.
What is your verdict..
