Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone have any advice on how to do good scans of annuals? I've tried many times and always end up with massive shadows down the sides...

Only way I can think of is to tear the pages out (use one copy to keep and one for scanning). Of course, I'd only recommend doing that with the recent ones that turn up regularly in charity shops, not 1960s ones which are harder to find. You don't want to destroy something you can't easily replace.

That kinda looks like Julio Schiaffino's work. The scans are kinda small though. Sometimes it's easier to identify an artist when there are a few pages of the same strip to view.

Well I'm not tearing this out of the Dandy Monster Comic 1944 as it will be crazy I tried and failed to do a scan of this double page Dan strip but it looked awful and the last panel always gives me a giggle with a lamp post sticking out of Dans backside!

Strange layout... almost as if it was supposed to be a single page in the then-fortnightly comic, rather than a two-page spread in the annual.

A few of the wartime annuals have this odd layout I think The Beano/Magic Beano books also used this layout too during WW2 and after

Maybe it was only way to fill the pages since some of the artists had been lost to the military.

By the 1944 Dandy and Beano annuals they got much slimmer plus Thomsons started to use much thinner paper instead of the thick card like stuff they used in the previous annuals with the 1943 annuals of both comics the last to use it so it'd be easier to print these double page spreads as you say Digi its also a good way to fill pages left vacant by artists who had got the then kings shilling...

The trend of the sideways Dan strips continued in the Dandy Monster Comic 1948 but these look like reprints from around 1938/9 when Desperate Dan only had half page strips

Ooh, I could never do that! Think I'd prefer having shadows show up on my blog to that - ripping books isn't a good thing.

Obviously I haven't always thought that way - I was looking through my 1986 Dandy annual the other day, only to find the whole thing was full of holes from where I'd made myself some Dandy Pogs back in 1996...

No as I've got an original ok it's falling to bits but it's still readable not too sure if the prices will sky rocket or bomb through the floor regards the end of the Dandy only time will tell
