What comics did you buy today?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Peter are you getting more into Adventure strips now(or were you anyway)?
So you have the 1960's Beezer Annual then.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I'm still a humour comic fan mostly..
If it is adventure stories I prefer the ones in comics aimed at children..
I'm not into whole adventure comics..
Prefer humour and adventure comics..50/50 ish..
I have the 1960 Beezer book of course..

I usually budget for £10 a Special and to be honest, I have only had to go over that once. But I expect that the 1967 one is going to cost a bit more. I got lucky and got a large collection of Victors for peanuts and as an added bonus, I got four Specials (1981 to 1984) in there!steelclaw wrote:Blimey that's good going must have cost you quite abit?colcool007 wrote:I'm still trying to get over getting the 1969 Victor Summer Special as I thought that it was going to take me years to get that little number. Now all I need is the 1967 one to have a full run of specials from 1967 to 1986. My post 86 collection is very spotty, so I just need to keep watching. Unless any of you kind souls have doubles you wish to sell....

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Picked up a couple of annuals for 50p each at Deptford Market yesterday. The June & School Friend one I have never come across before and it is absolutely pristine condition. And as a bonus has a nice Ron Embleton picture inside. It is a mixture of comic strips and text articles with illustrations.

The other item I have also never come across before. The cover is a bit scuffed but inside is very good.

Just worked out that you can chose your size options on tinypic so in future will be able to show images in a more convenient size.

Bought this on eBay last week. The first Funny Wonder Annual. Quite rare I believe? Cover edges a bit scuffed (only to be expected in those pre-laminate days) but spine intact and interior pages nice and clean and hardly yellowed! (Comic pages, which are on better paper, are almost white.) Some fantastic Roy Wilson work in this. Will run more images on my blog at a later date.

No Ken Reid or Leo Baxendale pages in that annual. (Leo didn't actually do any work for Pow!) Some nice work in there though by Graham Allen, Gordon Hogg, Stan McMurty and others.
Cover is by Graham Allen.

I have to admit STARBOY I'm not to hot on artists.
But I'm sure this is Ken Reid which features in the Annual.

That's the work of Cyril Price, ghosting Ken Reid for the annual. Cyril was also the artist on most of the Georgie's Germs strips for the weekly. He also drew The Tellybugs for Smash!steelclaw wrote:

Re: What comics did you buy today?
To be fair to you it's quite a good "ghosting" by Price. He mimics Reid's characters' facial expressions quite well, although he doesn't give them the variety of expression or manic horror in the faces that Ken Reid did. (And not enough beads of sweat flying off their foreheads, - a dead giveaway.steelclaw wrote:Oh well what do you expected I'm always wrong.
The artwork in Power Comics has confused a lot of people over the years, including myself. (When I was younger I used to think Graham Allen's work was by Baxendale for example, even though their styles are distinctly different.) Even today, fans credit Baxendale with work that wasn't his (and in some instances is inferior to his material).
Fortunately I later realised that Baxendale and Reid signed many (but not all) of their pages for Odhams, so that helps.
