The only way to beat sniping is to dispassionately decide what an item is worth to you and bid that amount. If it's beaten you don't feel bad because it sold for more than it was worth to you. If you ever come away from an auction having lost to a figure that you would have been prepared to pay, it's your own fault for not putting that amount in as a bid.

I must admit that this is the strategy I adopted over 9 years ago. If I want it, I'll put in the bid for my max amount in the last 12 hours. And if it gets beaten, then c'est la vie.

However, if your max bid does just get beaten, it can get very annoying. But I console myself that another item like it will be along at some point. I cannot afford to take part in bidding wars so that is why I rigidly stick to my max bid policy to keep myself within budget.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

That's the strategy I usually use, yep - and with each one I was outbid by 2p, 32p and 6p respectively.

They MIGHT come along again, but these were lovely "full set" sort of auctions. As a consolation, I won the eight other lots I was bidding on from the same seller, it's just that the ones I lost out on were the "main attractions", so to speak.

C'est la vie, que cera cera and so on.

I click on my maximum amount six seconds from the end of an auction, and lift my finger one second later. I can't remember the last time I didn't win the item.

Saturday’s Daily Express had two coupons for W H Smiths. One allowed you to get the 2015 Beano book for £2.99 and the other gave you 50% off any annual. I went to Smiths yesterday with the latter as I am not interested in new Beano annuals and looked at the Oor Wullie book and the Broons/Oor Wullie book but ended up not buying them. With regard to the normal Oor Wullie book I just find Peter Davidson’s art too bland and lacklustre. I’ve been spoilt by memories of Ken Harrison’s time on the strip I suppose. The thing is I buy these annuals every year but just put them away after a cursory glance through. This year I decided not to bother. If the Sunday Post would print the strips in Fun Section form like the old days I would happily buy that every week and keep the Fun Sections.

Didnt buy the Best of Whizzer and Chips annual and Battle. Not through choice may I add. Tried two large Sainsbury stoes but not a sign of them.

Not only exclusive but elusive. Very disappointing

The book shop in Greenwich had a thick book that reprinted all the Frank Bellamy Thunderbirds strips plus all the Lady Penelope strips - only £7. I don't have room for large books but I might get it next weekend as it is so tempting. Just to read the Mr Steelman story again.

Probably to sell at an inflated price on ebay,( which is what many will do ) this is why i complained to a manager in what is supposed to be the biggest sainsburys in london (tottenham) why they are useless & their online site is even worse as it is a joke you cant order them online.

Nothing wrong with sellling a collectable. That's what the comic industry is built upon. The fault is with Sainsbury for non-distribution of an exclusive product. The seller makes a small profit. The buyer gets something they want at a price they're happy with. The alternative is the potential reader can't get it.

If anyone is unhappy with comics being sold at a profit, I'll make an offer now for your first ever W&C at the cover price of six pennies. Surely, Sainsbury will start offering it online soon.

Why would I want to pay more for a book from an eBay seller that is on sale for less on a supermarket shelf? Plus the comic industry isn't built on the collectible market and never has been did DCT think when they launched the Dandy & Beano in 1937/8 that the first issues would be selling for thousands of pounds 76 years in the future? Nope they didn't...
