What comics did you buy today?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Got my TV21 Annual 1973 this morning and TV Tornado No. 1 yesterday.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-), Fantastic Four (2025-).

I couldn't resist it! I've just bought the British reprint of what may very well have been the worst comic ever: Tony Tallarico's Frankenstein, originally published by Dell in a moment of madness during the 1960s superhero craze inspired by the Batman TV show!

...Fortunately I got lots of good stuff too!

Bought some more Busters today. Am pleased because I have now completed 69, 73 & 74 so dont have many to go for the period 68-86. Also bought a couple of Cor from 1972.

Received in the mail from eBay, Cracker No. 74 (12/6/76) and bought at my local newsagent, the December 2013 issue of the 100% Official Dennis the Menace and Gnasher MEGAzine.

That Star Trek annual looks more like they're in a band than the crew of a spaceship XD
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Received a copy of School Fun Summer Special 1985 which now completes the run for me although it is slightly damaged so will try and upgrade in time.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I recently aquired two Dandy's. One from April 1963, the other from June 1967. The significance is that they have the debut and final appearance of "Big Head and Thick Head" who were big favourites of mine! Does anyone know the name of the artist who took over from Ken Reid circa 1964?
A Face unclouded by thought.

Frank McDiarmid took over in 1964, and drew most of them after that, but James Hughes drew a few fill-ins in 1966 or 67.alanultron5 wrote:I recently aquired two Dandy's. Got a Look and Learn dated 25th July 1964 through the post.
I also got two Lions from 1964 and 1965.
I was tempted to buy the full year of Lion 1967 from eBay though then found I already had them. So a decent saving there.

Wow! It's not unknown for me to buy some comic only to find I already owned a copy when I got home, but I've never yet done it with whole year's worth...!SID wrote:I was tempted to buy the full year of Lion 1967 from eBay though then found I already had them. So a decent saving there.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Going back to that frankly, frightful, Frankenstein Album, the British guide lists a 1963, 68 page, unnumbered vol. from Top Sellers, which featured Dell reprints, so I assume that's the same book. I ever seen it before, but I do have a couple of issues of the original Dell series. Don't know if it's the worst comic ever as The Purple Hood and Mark Tyme give it a good run for the money. Dell tried to get in on the superhero (fueled by the Batman t.v. show) craze and not only produced this load of old nonsense but also put out Dracula and Werewolf, both as sorts of superheroes. They're all a bit woeful imo. Hasn't stopped me having examples of them. (If this were a smiley, it would say, "how sad is that?")
Re. Tony Tallarico, there were a couple of relatively recent issues of Alter Ego which had features about him and other Charlton collaborators and well worth a read.

That was a great interview wasn't it? Tallarico might not be my favourite artist but I have to admit he's had a fascinating career!
The Frankenstein Album actually lists World Distributors as its British publisher - though 'Top Sellers' seems to have been a bit of a 'Frankenstein' outfit in its own right, incorporating a whole bunch of companies. Lew wrote a nice piece on them for his blog a couple of years ago:

(Hmmm....come to think of it the Purple Hood and Mark Tyme were pretty terrible weren't they?

Toppers 881, 922, 923 and 929 - 923 being the change of logo. All in fair condition, but I buy them to enjoy.
