Another colourful Christmas cover - this time from the pen and brush of Marvelman creator Mick Anglo who sadly passed away a few weeks ago.

I can finally 'stitch' two images together, but the Bash Street Kids [from 1966] isn't the easiest to put together seamlessly

Flawless stitching Rab, but I agree that Dandy and Beano centrespreads can be a nightmare unless you're prepared to unglue them from the rest of the comic. It's far easier with a page from Beezer or Topper (as below) - though a centrespread might require you to patch as many as four scans together!



And while I'm at it here's the opening page of the Puss an' Boots story for that week - presumably their last ever 'Fistmas' together in Sparky (even if it was just a pull-out section by then). Geering may have been a bit past his best on the strip but he's still not too shabby imho - and that plucked turkey in the first panel is seriously weird!





As a matter of interest what difficulty are you currently having with larger images?

The funny thing is I've just bought the New Year issue of 2000AD - and it still isn't Christmas Day yet!

On the other hand I seem to remember that happening with most comics back in the good old days...!

Not just comics... Chat magazine had it's 100-page Christmas issue out for two weeks. Then another 108-page double issue came out... but was only on sale for a week before the next normal sized issue came out, and another has come out since. Something isn't quite right there.

It may be Boxing Day but I reckon there's still time to show off another of Roy Wilson's wonderful seasonal covers for Tip Top:



I really love the humorous detail he put into each unique title header - not to mention all those beautifully drawn animals crammed into the borders. Presumably the fortnightly schedule allowed artists to spend longer on each page than would have been possible with a weekly title. I wonder if they were paid any extra for these decorative scenes?

...And in anticipation of next weekend's festivities here's the following New Year cover - complete with its own cascading menagerie:



It's interesting to note that the comic double-act of Sugar the baby bear and Candy the long-eared pup eventually become so popular that they evicted Happy Andy from his own strip, carrying on simply as 'Our Playful Pets' until Tip Top's final issue in 1954 (though the series was briefly reprinted in Fleetway's Big One during the 1960s).
