What comics did you buy today?

As a side note, going back to the long-winded titles that Wizard was bogged down with: i.e. Five Bullets for Idris the Cruel, is it any wonder why they could not compete with the modern titles of Warlord and Bullet who had the likes of "Twisty", "Smasher", "Sniper", and "Union Jackson"?

I'm sure that as time goes by, Geoff, you'll learn to cope with titles that contain more than two words. Be more demanding of yourself. And as far as the stories are concerned, The Wizard [mark 2] has many a story that rewards those who read them. Have a look at Chained To His Sword, Larsen, Keeper Of The Sword, The Barrow Boy From Mars, Cast-Iron Cribb, The Ace Of Space, The Secret War Of Deep Sixteen, South Of Cataract 5, Terror In The Tall Tower, Slocum Of The Six Knives, The Frozen Man, Vengeance With A Smile, The Iron Three, The Hounds Of Hangman's Peak, Follow That Man!, and Corn Cob McGreedy. They'll do for starters, and by the time you've read half of them you will have realised, not only that the longer titles are introducing quality tales, but that they manage to get by quite nicely without just smashing people to pieces or simply killing them. Then perhaps you could read Five Bullets For Idris The Cruel, the first step towards putting away your issues of Warlord and Bullet.

hi, phoenix, I still stick to my claim that the titles are somewhat longwinded and weren't the greatest way to attract attention from a little boy with a five minute attention span... but I agree with you with regard to the story content that is there to be discovered. As a little boy, I never had interest in Wizard or Hotspur (mark two's) but now, in collecting them as an adult, I'm really enjoying the discovery of such gems. Nice to hear from you as always

I have bought loads of comics over the past couple of weeks. Some of note include a collection of 14 Beanos from the 1950's, 60's and 70's, , a copy of The Dandy from 1957, 49 Beanos from 1993, a huge collection of Busters and Beanos from 1994,95,96 which were described as 'hundreds found in my loft' so not sure exactly how many there are. I also got a copy of 'Comic Cuts' from 1950. I mentioned in a recent post a conversation with my Nan about this comic, which is exactly why I bought it, as my curiosity got the better of me and also thought it would be a nice thing to show her.
I've been very busy on eBay as of late!

Just purchased today from 30th Century Comics, Sparky No. 378 (which replaes one of two better issues wanted from that year) and replaced a copy of 1584 with a copy of 1504 of the Dandy. Will update the Sparky pages shortly.

Just the one today on a quick visit to town, the 30th June 1973 issue of Cor! - being the only item of interest in a box full of UK comics in a shop full of US comics. LOADS of Eagle comics in there if anyone's interested (next to the "Level Up" games shop in Grand Central, near Lime Street in Liverpool).

just purchased Battle Picture comics from no.3 to the end of 1975 (a consecutive run) in a series of bundles of 4 issues per £10.99. It works out at £2.75 per issue which has got to be a bargain. The issues are in great condition and no pages are missing, including certain booklet posters that were invariably included. The only blemish is the issue 3 which has no free gift or its booklet centre page. I can live with that. Many issues have a newsagent written on the top page (a no-no, for me) but the writing is in pencil and can be easily erased. I know this because I have purchased various issues from 1977 from same buyer: very easily erased and leaves no trace. Maybe I could have bought a whole year bundle at a cheaper price at some point in the future but, having bought previously from this buyer, I know his issues are in brilliant condition and fully in tact; I have no regrets. Very happy as many of these issues are for at least £4 an issue when postage is included, more even!

as a side note from above post, I have purchased these Battle comics under the influence of alcohol. Before I went out this evening, I was thinking about them on a serious level but, I'm sure, if I were sober I wouldn't have bought so many at once. Alcohol more or less said: "Get them while they're still on offer and before anyone else gets them, and think about your finances when you awake in the morning." How many times have folk on this site come home from the pub and bid on items they wouldn't ordinarily do so if they were sober in the cold light of day? Thankfully, I'm in a situation where I can shrug it off and grit my teeth the next day (I have no partner nor kids to think of, so I can invariably extend my budget to its limits.) But still, even without personal commitments, I can't buy whatever I want. Yet, alcohol does impair my sensibilities some nights. How many times I've woken up in the morning and thought: "No, you didn't...? Oh, for crying out loud, you did!" Anyone else felt like that?

Not personally, no, but about ten years ago my son Andrew went to a charity auction of sporting memorabilia somewhere in London, and very much under the affluence of incahol won a large, framed signed photograph of Sylvester Stallone in Rocky for the best part of £300. I say signed but no hint of either the actor's name or that of the role he was playing can be deciphered from the scrawl that could equally easily have been achieved by a schoolboy with a felt-tip pen. He has never hung it anywhere but he hasn't sold it on either.

Got the 1970 Eagle annual the other day (and The Phoenix, that's picking up again!). The Dan Dare story in it is very strange, time-travelling shape-shifters are trying to sabotage Spacefleet for no reason, Dan and co travel to thier home planet and, erm, frighten them a bit. Then thier base explodes.

No, but I only drink socially and only once a week these days. I operate on the principle of 'Don't use the internet when you're inebriated' so I suppose we can add to that: 'Don't bid when you're bladdered'.

Haha, I was reading a classic car magazine once, where they had to get cars from different decades for £500. Anything from the 50's for that money wasn't going to be much good anyway, but, after drunken ebaying, the one the guy got slowly started to apply the brakes by itself the further he went XD

I do drink socially, Lew, but the trouble is that I'm usually left on my own after 10 o'clock and I carry on until last orders. And, as I work continental shifts, there are times I will have a lot of spare time to drink. I do avoid day time drinking but, in the evening, when I know I don't have to get up in the morning, the brakes are off. Then, I get home and think... damn, I really do want that item I saw earlier

Well for someone who went to a ComicCon, I bought very few comics. I did buy Zulu Water Cart Rescue (Accent UK), Tales Of The Universe (UniVerse), Sally Heathcote Suffragette (Jonathan Cape) and two pages of Colin MacNeil's art from Insurrection. So a lot of pennies spent.

And I did get some rather nice freebies such as a sketch of Tank Girl's Booga amongst others.
