Thanks. I hadn't seen that blog before either until I Googled for Captain America Commie Smasher.

Interesting that the UK version changed it to 'Spy Smasher' as we weren't so paranoid about 'Commies' over here.

Wandered through my usual charity shops today and on a bookshelf before me in one shop was a line of six cloth edged annuals.I was slightly disappointed when they turned out to be girl's SCHOOL FRIEND.They ran in sequence starting at 1951.I have a few representatives of this annual but since the shop was only asking 50p each I thought I would buy the oldest the 1951 annual, only then to find this was an all story annual with no comic strips so I decided not to bother.
Did buy something from another charity shop though and that was this----

Revolver HORROR SPECIAL paid 99p
Liked the cover with a witches face ,it failed to be scary though ,quite attractive in fact.

Revolver was a great mag. Absolutely one of my favourite comics. The Horror Special was terrific. Very recommended. Even better was the Romance Special. Can't believe that sold in enormous quantities mind you.

Won 40 consecutive issues of Warlord for £3.95 plus postage on eBay. Arrived today. Loads of in yer face action and nice work by Mike Dorey, Mike White and others.

Never been a fan of war comics but for that price I thought I'd give them a chance. I'm more interested in the artwork and presentation really. I've always liked the way that Warlord changed the look of British comics with it's more dynamic covers and title pages. It inspired Battle, Action, Bullet, and 2000AD in that regard I think.

Some smashing hand drawn logo designs on those DC Thomson serials.

"Some nice old British reprints of American comics...

Adventures into Weird Worlds No. 1 (Thorpe & Porter)

Captain America No. 1 (L. Miller & Son Ltd)

Startling Terror Tales No. 1 ("ABC Chiller")

Tales from the Crypt No. 1 ("ABC Chiller")

I don't know anything about these, and it's hard to find out anything online, especially about the Captain America comic - does anyone know when they date from?
" - babington

Startling Terror Tales, published here by Arnold Book Co., is a reprint of Star Publications material and the British comic featured in the UK Horror Comic campaign (or perhaps, the UK anti-horror comic campaign) . The cover is from #9 of the American series and the first 3 stories are reprinted from that issue. The rest I can't work out right now but Rulah is a Fox character.
Tales From The Crypt are obviously EC reprints and your British (ABC, again) comic was also cited on the Horror comics campaign.
Adventures into Weird Worlds features reprints of Marvel material and is rare. Should command more than a few quid should you put it for auction.

Thanks Paw. The 'Adventures' is is fairly worn shape, but it's nice to know it's a good one to find :-)

Here's how the original looked. Pre-code material, so definitely collectible:

Starscape - if you're asking me, I wouldn't like to say but as I am not really a British reprint collector I might put them on eBay in the new year because if they're quite rare there may perhaps be someone out there who would appreciate them more than me (though they are great!)...

Today I saw a tarzan book on display in Oxfam .There was no price on the book and one of the assistants said she would find out the price for me if I Could wait around for a couple of minutes.I told her if it was expensive I would not be interested. When she returned she said it was £1.99 and I was ok with that. The first few pages were about the comic history and art ,from then on it was in fullcolour. The book dates from 1973 and I was pleased to add it to my collection.

Here are some images of it

Picked up a load of stuff at the ephemera fair. Mostly magazines but three Mad magazines from the 1960s, a Casper comic from 1962. A Valiant, Hurricane and Tiger all from 11th July 1964, three Boys of the Empire from 1890s, some copies of The Coloured Comic from 1904 including a Christmas issue but very tatty. Some Boys Cinemas and a free Football Fan book from Adventure from the 1950s. And a couple of Disney comic adaptations of Hayley Mills films Pollyanna and The Parent Trap. They are American comic sized but with one shilling printed on them and are called Super Mags published by Gold Token books. All these items were £2 each. Also got Radio Times and TV Times from same week in July 1964. Oh and War Picture Libraries 382, 387 and 388 from 1967. Lots of bagging up to do over Christmas. The dealer said he had over a hundred crates of stuff in his garage and will e-mail me any comics he finds.

Was getting a bit agitated as I could see all this stuff but couldn't get to it as there were three old timers looking at them, one going through every issue one page at a time - don't you hate that? Makes me wish I was Sergeant Bilko and could bark out an order sending them scattering off in all directions.

Not a fan of the Simpsons artwork and never bothered watching the cartoon series.Today one of my favourite charity shops was continuing its Christmas sale and as a collector I would have been foolish not to have bought the following items at such low prices.

SIMPSONS comics ROYALE paid 25p
SIMPSONS comics EXTRAVAGANZA paid 25p
SIMPSONS comics UNCHAINED paid 25p
Was going to get another simpsons but then changed my mind and bought.
Disney literature classics DONALD GULLIVERS TRAVELS paid 25p

As you can see I rounded everything up to a pound. The Disney one belongs to a series of which I have a few already and they seemed to have been used as some sort of promotional item in local newspapers This particular one has IRISH INDEPENDENT on the cover and others in my collection have different newspapers headings. When I first started buying these there were a lot of the titles easily available.I did notice the variation in art from the older looking disney style to a more modern style in the different books.I only collected titles I thought contained the older disney style.Going back to the Simpsons I will read them and who knows I might become a fan.
