What comics did you buy today?

I could hardly beleive my eyes when i stumbled upon the first volume of Chums (1892-3) on Ebay with a Buy It Now of £27 earlier today! Needless to say i jumped on it and it ought to arrive sometime next week. What a stroke of luck!

It's always interesting to discover a new Reg Parlett strip, and the fact that they still turn up after all these years only goes to show what an astonishingly fertile imagination he had. This morning I picked up a 1963 Odhams title in which the following character appears - I wonder if anyone can guess what it was?

Just been to a boot sale and bought the 1971-73 Dandy Books and the 1979 Sparky Book for a quid each. I'm going to settle down and read them later.

I've just got back from a local car boot. I picked up Sixty Years - The Beano and The Dandy - Funshine And Laughter in Near Mint condition for 10p. I only bought it as a curio but I'm actually quite pleased with it because, apart from being able to read strips about later (than 1950) characters from The Beano and The Dandy that I've never seen before as far as I know, like Bully Beef and Chips and Baby-Face Finlayson, the thrust of the book, in its attempt to present sunshine, is towards Summer Specials, and it includes The Topper and The Beezer. Even Twinkle, Bunty and The Victor are raided in order to fill the book out. The advantage of this to me is the presentation of other characters I have only read about on the Forum and never clapped eyes on in my life such as Mickey The Monkey, Baby Crockett, The Banana Bunch and The Numskulls. It is interesting to see that Bunty's Cut-Out Wardrobe was rehashed for Twinkle. I don't want to appear over-enthusiastic about this book but it was certainly worth 10p.

Nice bargain phoenix4ever 2/- can't be bad, I've picked 7 of those The Beano and The Dandy books and I've never been disappointed, but never for 10p.

My last comic Haul was a couple of weeks at ago at the carboot sale.I paid £3 for the lot, which isn't to bad, I'm still amazed I can find any comics these days but they are out there if you look hard enough.

You've never even seen some of the most famous characters to grace The Beano, Dandy, Beezer and Topper comics? But you're a Guru! *scratches head* Take a look at Peter Gray's website or blog, should be scans of all of those characters there.

You're taking the Mickey the monkey, you lot!! When exactly have you ever seen me doing any of my guruing on comics, comic characters or artists? I wouldn't have thought there was any point in my being a clone of Kashgar, in fact I don't think he can be duplicated, to be honest. However, if you need any information about DC Thomson story papers for boys or girls between 1921 and 2001 then 'let me be your guru'. Come to think of it, maybe that was one of the numbers in my repertoire when I went busking in Hyde Park, or perhaps it was a Bowie number that caught me unawares and slipped under the radar, then again it was probably George Harrison. If I remember correctly, he was into that sort of thing.

The other annual was "The Aeronauts 1973" (couldn't quite remember the name earlier on!)

The '72 Boy's World annual has art by Don Lawrence, Frank Humphris (and José Ortiz I think), a lot of the strips have a writer+artist credit. The cover is great.

Did Mike Noble do any other annual covers?
