Just got the 1937 Rover Book from a charity shop. Rather pricey for me at £4.99 but it is a nice, clean copy (albeit without a dust-jacket: does anybody know if it would have originally had one?). To be honest I hadn't realised some of these early annuals were so small! I also got various other items including a long run of Top Spot, a Daily Graphic Whiskers Annual and about thirty early Eagles with Frank Bellamy artwork.

No, Phil, the early annuals for The Rover and The Skipper didn't have dustwrappers, but to compensate they had very attractive full-colour covers. In fact, I don't recall Thomsons using wrappers for any of their annuals prior to the first Bunty annual in 1960.

Thanks Phoenix. I really like the way they used wraparound illustrations for the covers. Does anyone know who painted this one? It doesn't look so much like Watkins to me (though it could be) - Chick Gordon perhaps?

In fact the Adventureland annuals did come with dustjackets as they were a prestige and therefore costlier production than the other Thomson annuals. Some of the 'special' books like 'The Fun Book for Boys' and '25 Star Stories for Boys' also came with dustjackets.
I''ll get back to you on the cover artist for the 1937 Rover Book Phil.

Thanks for identifying the cover artist of that Rover Book Kashgar. I love the way all those rootin' tootin' cowboys somehow managed to look like Sir Harry Lauder in spite of their chaps and ten-gallon hats! :)

I think Graham Manley could ghost that style really well. Have you seen the stuff he has been doing for DCT publicity department? Lovely stuff.

I received Roy of the Rovers no.2 with free rosette sticker gift this week for £24, including postage in very good condition. I only had one bidder with which to contend - the starting price was £19.99. I've tried to win this item on two occasions with Phil's Auctions - both times, the price exceeded £35. On what I have received convinces me that Phil's Auction garners an inflated interest that, in turn, inflates the prices on various items that shouldn't be really inflated. Of course, Phil provides a good service and offers many rare items, but he can be trumped as well on rare items. I guess patience is the key. By the way, Phil has an ongoing auction this weekend and, I must admit, i'm salivating at several items. Who mentioned "patience"?

Methinks that the Post Office must have be on strike yesterday as I didn't get any comics through the post - in particular 2000AD and Doctor Who Comic. So bought a copy of the latter from my local WHSmith. I must say that I am enjoying all three strips of the various Doctors plus the mini ones. :)

I bought Doctor Who Comic yesterday too. But if you was expecting it in the post, I assume you've taken out a subscription? In which case, why buy another copy?

there was one comic in particular that I was intent on winning on Phil's Auctions and I got it: Beano issue from 1977 with free gift. Then, before I went out to my local, I decided to bid an extra few quid on Crunch issue 3 with free gift and expected to be trumped. As it happens, I wasn't. That was a pleasant surprise. I'm working nights for the next two nights, so don't really expect to win anything else as I usually wage my highest bid in the dying seconds. But with regard to Crunch issue 3... sometimes a bid too far works. Still, i'm happy with my lot.
