25p for the 2000AD annual.....bargain!

I've just got the high bids on 2 Commandos from 1966. And it has cost me less than a fiver for both of them! Wow.

I just bought issue 229 of SPARKY [1969] :

I actually bought very good quality copies of the 104 copies making up all the 1969 and 1970 issues back in 2007, however ONE issue---229-----has a wee hole right through the comic, probably caused by a worm-parasite or something: other than that, every other issue and the rest of issue 229 is top-notch.

However, issue 229 contains my favourite-ever I SPY episode, and I decided to wait for a good 'whole' copy: the issue I already have is not really all that bad: far, far better than nothing, and no crucial faces or essential detail are actually missing: the entire comic is entirely readable-----but that annoying tiny pinprick of light when you hold the comic up to the light!

Ah, people like collectors are never satisfied: I actually done a hi-res scan of the pages and done an 'invisible mending' job on the tiny holes, but really I wanted a whole copy.
This issue contains my favourite-ever episode of my favourite-ever comics story and as such is my 'Holy Grail'.

One last thing: I sat down and done me sums: after converting 'real' pre-decimal money, I worked out that buying this 'new' replacement costs:

TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY TIMES [EXACTLY] the original face value price!!!!

---In fact, if SPARKY had remained at the original 'old fivepence' price throughout it's run, the entire 600 odd issues could have been purchased for about two pounds fifty [in fact less!]

Step into the time machine with me now, Starscape and hand over the cash in 1969 and it 's a deal!

In 1969 I got two shillings and sixpence a week pocket money or 12 and a half pence in decimal terms so fivepence went on Sparky

The 1969 copy. I paid for today cost me nearly a fiver, but a fiver is a smaller percentage of my weekly expenditure if we scale up inflation.......if somebody had told me I would be spending 240 times as much for a Sparky in almost 50 years time though I would never have believed it!

I have seen that. Can you people stop making me want to spend money that I don't have?

A week at seaside I now have an inkling of what it was like for Scott of the antarctic.Only monday stopped the brave carboot sellers .I visited 7 carboots in the 2/3 mile area where we were situated and got-
Image
HIGHEST PRICE PER ITEM PAID £2.95 for BROONS WITH FREE PLAYING CARDS from a market store.
FAVOURITE BARGAIN SUPERADVENTURE ANNUAL 50p also from same seller Rupert, Victor, Beano for 50p each these I would not have bought at an higher price because they are not rare.
COMIC HEROES a mag about comics.A seller had a pile of these mags at 30p each I cautiously bought three should have bought more.
At thursday carboot there was a seller who is there each year and normally brings a selection of old magazines and comics. He always gives a discount so you can ignore his original label prices.Bought from him 5× JOKER COMICS 1929, CARTOON MOVIE POSTER BOOK, BETTY AND ME and BOOSTER GOLD comic for £5 the lot ,a price I didn't argue with.
SPACE 1999 and GIRL FROM UNCLE cost £2 each , this seller had a number of JOE 90 books but wanted £6 each for which I wasn ' t interested at buying at that price.
GOLDEN BOOK OF COMICS and SCHOOL FRIEND ANNUAL 1929 were my first buys at a £1 each.
This morning bought 5 horror stories comics for £8 before leaving for home.
Back now to saving mode :)

Even though I was working at the Edinburgh Comic Con, I was still able to complete a swap with a fellow Picture Library fan there. And in return for about 40 Commandos with two dedicated to him by Ian Kennedy, I got a huge pile of Commandos.

Not only that, I also got a S.A.T.A.N Picture Library, a Top Secret Picture Library, an Undercover Picture Library, a Pocket War Library, three Cowboy Adventure Libraries, a Secret Agent Fleetway Super Library and a June and School Friend Picture Library Holiday Special.

While I was really chuffed to get the Commandos, I was really excited to see the other examples of Picture Libraries as they can often give clues to other things that are going on in the comics medium.

Happy/Sad not sure.
I was in saving mode today as I went around the towns charity shops and had the thought of probably spending a pound if I saw something I liked.I like to look around and thats why I went into Oxfam usually one of the dearer shops.
I was suprised to find old Classics Illustrated at 49p each and other comics at 99p each.bought these.
]Image
They also had William Tell in classics with no cover at 49p and a few of the newer versions of Classics Illustrated such as War of the Worlds and Robin Hood at 99p but I prefer the old ink type.I bought comics with reprints of the golden age which I think have a certain charm.I could have bought a few more but the cash signs in my head was warning me not to.Classics at 49p where did that come from?can, t they sell them or something?I spent £7.40p when I should have been saving.Happy/Sad not sure.
