What comics did you buy today?

Well today I got Worlds FInest No181 (fpr £1.98) Hellboy Junior (No1) £2.80. and 3 House of Mysterys 107,182, 185 (£3 for the 3??"!!! brilliant price) no British comics though sorry all good reads though.

2000AD, Classic Illustrated, same old same old.
Also volume 5 of Death Note, a famous Japanese comic that was turned into cartoons and then into a live action film (which i watched whilst flying to Japan-brilliant!). A totally ruined Hollywood version is inevitable too...

There was also a book sale on in a church, i had a scour but couldn't find anything so settled for some pre-war adventure books and a 50's paperback about an RAF pilot.

Last Saturday I got the Boyfriend annual 1967 for a pound and it was in almost mint condition! I wonder where it has been for the past 42 years to remain undamaged.

Didn't buy any comics today, went to HMV and bought John Woo's Red Cliff - the four and a half hour long version.

A good bargain, but Crikey! can only survive if people buy it new. It doesn't have a major publisher behind it so it needs all the support it can get.

Nothing wrong with men reading Bunty! How many boys read their sister's comics when they were kids? A lot, I reckon (and the other way around, girls reading boys comics, of course). Guilty pleasures, lol.

I don't want this to seem like I'm having a dig, but the current issue of Crikey! is the first one to have newsstand distribution. It's been available on subscription for 11 issues so I'm at a loss to understand why some comic fans here haven't already tried it?

Is it the scope of its content that puts people off? Personally I'm interested in all aspects of UK comics (and US comics but that's irrelevant here) so there's always going to be something in Crikey! that interests me. And beyond that, it's still interesting to learn about comics one hasn't read. Are some comic fans only interested in specific comics or something? Or are some fans still just "comic readers" rather than being interested in the history of the genre?

Crikey! has had its flaws (you can pretty much ignore most of the "info" in the Smash! article in issue 3 for example) but overall it's very much worth supporting and it's improving all the time. Remember this isn't a mag backed by big publishers and big money; it's pretty much a home-made magazine (albeit a good looking one) so it depends on the comic fan community supporting it.

I'm on the Crikey soapbox too. Without our support, it will wither on the vine.

But back on-topic, I bought a few goodies at the weekend such as a Best Of Beezer, Best Of Topper, some Beano Stars, Oor Wullie Special No 12 and the 1978 Action Annual. All for the princely sum of £2.50.

I also got the two Best Of books by Alan Riches and so far I have only delved into the war stories book (the football one I am keeping as a later read!). I have enjoyed it immensely. Plus, as an added bonus, it seems to confirm that another Harry Farrugia script was based on an original Wizard text story. The Last White Boy In Singapore was beautifully illustrated by Harry in the early years of the Victor and it would really be cool to find out that it is the same storyline in both cases. Confirmation by Phoenix or Kash that I have added 2+2 and made 4 would be appreciated!

I did look at one or 2 of my sisters comics, she didn't get many,the odd Mandy & Bunty, I think I tried to cut out one of those paper dolls and dress it with paper clothes without success because I was useless.

Might have been a generational thing, but i remember having absurd product loyalty when i was young. I never even read my brother's Dandy much because "i get the Beano so it's the best". If i'd had a sister i probably wouldn't have dared go near her comics!

I also had a furtive look in a magazine in a shop once, fearful of being caught... it was a Nintendo magazine, we had a Sega, it'd never do to be seen "consorting with the enemy!"

...of course, Sonic the Hedgehog now appears in Nintendo games, so it's ok!

...and Mario in Sega games - the Olympic games are actually Sega titles, Nintendo allows Sega to use their characters and in return, Sonic was allowed to appear in Super Smash Bros. I wouldn't be surprised if he appears in the next Mario Kart!
