Re: What comics did you buy today?
Some great bits won today on Ebay:
A complete set of 22 Tornado comics in what looks to be (I hope) very good condition.
Tales of the Supernatural (Alan Class)
5 issues of Crikey that I've not read
Marvel All Colour Comics - The Man-thing #1
Fleetway Super Library - Maddock's Marauders (Front Line Series No.1 - 1967)
Marked for Murder #1: The Murder of a lonely Sailor (Top Sellers) 1965 which I've not come across before.
Total cost, including postage, almost exactly what I received for a MWoM #3 with free gift stickers and 4 odd 70s Marvel doubles that I had loaded.

The full year of Bunty for 1975 from Phil Shrimpton's auction to add to the three full years of Judy that I won from his recent interim auction, all in Fine/Very Fine condition.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I went to the ephemera fair in Bloomsbury yesterday (that's becoming a cliche). I picked up a few items.
Seven Book and Magazine Collector magazines for 50p each. Some had the "Great British Comic Artists" articles including ones on Ron Turner, Hugh McNeill, Ken Reid, Don Lawrence, Roland Davies and Sep. E. Scott (the last two I had never heard of). Also another issue with an article on Film, radio and TV Comics.
21 issues of Star Weekly from 1955. A Saturday newspaper section from Canada featuring full colour, full page strips of Tarzan, Terry and the Pirates, Blondie, The Lone Ranger, Flash Gordon (by Mac Raboy), Popeye, Steve Canyon, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Mandrake the Magician and Superman by Wayne Boring. Plus a few other strips. They were £5 each.
A Litttle Golden Book Tom & Jerry meet Little Quack from 1977. £1.
A glossy Hamley's Catalogue from 1977. £1.
A book called The Wonderful World of American Advertisments from 1865 to 1900. £2
and four issues of Golden Fun Fanzine for £1 each. No. 3 Winter 1975, no. 6 Winter 1976 which is in the form of The Bodger Comic with all new strips, no. 7 Summer 1977 and no. 8 with a free copy of The Bodger no. 2 inside. Issue 3 has all the pages having print on only one side so half the issue is blank pages. It takes us back to the days before double sided photocopying. When I first started work in the early seventies at Mirror Newspapers we used a Banda Machine where the copies came out wet. Anyone remember those?

There was also a large book about Chuck Jones for £2 but I just don't have the space for big books anymore. They have to be essential buys now.

I have now picked up and paid for these issues and the pictures do not do them justice. I now have the original issue 120 of Portrait of Death and the reprint 4740. And the original publication has a shinier cover. How amazing is that?colcool007 wrote:The deal is now done and I have been fortunate enough to get 40 issues of Commando ranging from issue 5 to 165 for an excellent price for me. Here are some pictures for those that do not have me on social media.
I think you can see why I was a little excited at this deal now.
Once I get over my nervousness of touching them, I will do pictures and I can feel a blog post coming on!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I bought the digest-sized "Space Adventures" no. 2 and 3, featuring 'The Perils of Blue Beetle' and 'Moon-Run', which seem to have been published by L. Miller in 1959. There doesn't seem to be much information about them on the web though- was this the first time Blue Beetle was reprinted in the UK? Were these the only Miller digest comics? The Grand Comics Database lists two issues, but this is clearly a third one. Were there more?

I've had a look in the British Guide and they show 2 listings for Space Adventures, both by Miller and featuring Charlton reprints. The 1st. entry says, "1950's" and shows #1 and #2-? So they don't know how many issues there were. The 2nd. entry is for a #50-? dated 1953-?
I don't have this title
and I'm really glad you posted the cover illo.
As for Blue Beetle reprints, there were 2 different short runs with the Blue Beetle title, the first published by Streamline/Anglo-American in 1950 featuring Fox stories. The 2nd. by Miller in the 1950's - no more accurate dates in the Guide. This was a series of 3 issues again featuring Fox reprints.
If it's of any help or interest, the Fox issues - and in fact all the G.A. Blue Beetle comics, his appearances in anthology titles and the pre- Ditko Charlton issues, are all pd and can be found free and legally on a number of websites.
Blue Beetle was also reprinted in France in 12 page landscape comics as was Superman, although both had name changes, I think but I can't find my copies to check.

Brilliant, thanks Paw...
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I was on holiday and spent a few days in London, and on Monday, I took the bus out to 30th. Century Comics, where I spent a bit too much. A few lovely issues of Cowboy Picture Library; 5 x Thriller Picture Library - #s 95 (art by Reg Bunn), 102 (art by H.M.Brock), 171 (art by Robert Forrest) and 2 Dick Turpin issues incl. #189 with art by Brock. I love those Turpin stories!
Also, some WDL Western and Movie Classics as well as a few Dell and GK originals. I finally completed my 77 sunset Strip collection with the GK #2 (Russ Manning). It's a real pleasure going in there and browsing.

In his The British Comics Catalogue, babington, Denis Gifford has three entries relating to Space Adventures published by L. Miller & Son. See below.babington wrote:I bought the digest-sized "Space Adventures" no. 2 and 3, featuring 'The Perils of Blue Beetle' and 'Moon-Run', which seem to have been published by L. Miller in 1959.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I finally won Ray Moore's Buster index 1960-95 afters years of bidding every time it came up and got it for a third of the price i offered phil's comics auction last week.
Ray you have to reprint these index books and possibly update them to he end as i also want the beezer and topper books and would love to see books on whizzer and chips .roy of the rovers ,whoopee eagle.tiger etc.im sure quite a few on this forum would love to see another printing of these valuable and insightful refernce books.
