I wonder why they didn't change both comics in the same week?

In December last year, the Beano changed to a different type of A4 paper to the one it changed to four months later, in spite of the fact that the Dandy had already been printed on the latter sort for two months at the time. I don't know why it happens, but apparently it always has.

Not to mention the Beano not changing paper when the Dandy did in 2004 (they finally did so in 2008). I know it's happened on other occasions both before and since 1988, the question was why.

The Beano went glossy with the 50th birthday issue. My knowledge of Dandy history is sadly lacking, so was Dandy dated 20 Feb '88 (apparently the first glossy for that title) a celebration issue?

Apparently so.

I recognize this cover from the time, when I used to buy the comics.

However I do recall a DANDY cover from around the same period that definitely had a celebratory air---this depicted Dan and Korky bursting through the cover, another Ken Harrison job...possibly early Dec, 1987?

I remember this time well for all sorts of reasons....

That was the 50th anniversary issue of the Dandy, but that was a month or so before the new look.

As to why the two comics didn't change at the same time, I assume it was either A) that the Dandy was the guinea pig for the new style, or B) that the Beano postponed it's new look to coincide with its 50th anniversary issue, or C) both.

That Minnie strip is great!

...but no actual 'spanking'. It would be interesting to know when The Beano last featured the comic use of a slipper or cane - I'm guessing it's much earlier that 1988...

I continued my backwards trawl through the non-glossy Beanos. In the 07 May 1988 issue there's a reprint of a Dudley Watkins Lord Snooty, in which a couple of monkeys spank Snitch and Snatch, but that doesn't really count as it's a vintage strip.

The next slippering I encountered in my journey back in time was this one from the issue dated 02 April 1988. I'm probably reading too much into the story (and I'm making the wild assumption that there were no spankings in the glossy Beanos), but I wonder whether DCT made the decision that this would be the last Beano slippering (quite possibly, as no contact between slipper and rear-end is shown), so in the interests of justice, engineered a situation in which Walter was the one to administer the final physical punishment to the Menace's derriere.

As we saw in my earlier post, Minnie got a boot up the backside a few weeks later in the 11 June 1988 issue, but that was delivered by Dad via a puppet, as was the Dennis slippering from '87 which Steelclaw posted earlier in the thread. Maybe by this time DCT felt that delivering corporal punishment via remote control somehow made it less contentious.

In this week's Beano (issue 3600) there was a reprint of a Dennis the Menace story which featured this sortof punishment at the end.

It was only implied, not explicit (no mention of whacking, just Dad with a spade, you're just meant to assume he's using it as a substitute slipper), and they did say that Dennis gets away with things more now. Anyway, they also admitted that the strip was from the 1960s.

Paul Ailey later drew the last incarnation of the Champ for Whizzer and Chips, and Little Adam and Eva for Jackpot. I think he was an IPC staff artist, but am open to correction.
