Beano 1 replica

Post by davidandrewsimpson »

I bought Scottish newspaper The Sunday Post yesterday for the repica of the first issue of The Beano they gave away. The odd bit of lettering was a bit small for comfortable reading, which made me wonder if it was smaller than the real thing.

Size of the replica is 28 by 21 cms (11 x 8.25 inches for ther old-fashioned out there)

Er, that should have been "replica", not "repica". Sorry about that.

The size sounds about right for the original. Lettering and text was often quite small back then. Over the decades lettering in children's comics has become larger, and more simplified, - as have the kids. ;-)

I do yes and ive just read your post spy in the beano sub forum and it looks nice from the scans you posted i wonder why thomsons didnt put one in the english edition they do sell the beano south of the border and have done for the past 70 years so i cant fathom out why they only issued them in scotland and not england and wales

dunno, DM, it's an odd one........Andy in NORTHERN IRELAND got it also, as did at least one other site member.....I can't understand the thinking at all, even though I'm Scottish, I think that DCT should at least have made it available as a mail-in offer for the true enthusiasts like yourself in areas of England and beyond.

you think that they would have done that spy or put in the 70th birthday edition no doubt they will be appearing on ebay at vastly inflated prices any time soon

Write to DCT and see if they'll post you one, if they're not flooded with loads of people asking for the same thing.

Just don't all do it at once...

As predicted there are 6 beano no 1 repros on ebay prices range from 99p to £3.75 and they all say it has 24 pages but the original had 28 pages at a guess the pages they have missed out are cracker jack due to the horses name peanuts page of fun (peanut was the black kid next to the beano title) the joke page and black flash the beaver looks like thomsons dont want the backlash they got over the smarty grandpa story they reprinted a few years back
