What comics actually makes you laugh? During the forties I took and loved the Beano and Dandy, enjoying what was on offer without finding them particularly funny. The comics I did find funny, or at least some of the charactors in them, were Knockout, Film Fun and Mickey Mouse weekly. Even now I can laugh at "Our Ernie" by Hugh Mcneill, "Laurel and Hardy"by both Wakefields and "Donald Duck" by Al Taliaferro. I appear to be waiting in vain for a large glossy book of said Donald Duck, they all seem to be of Carl Barks.

Didn't we have a similar topic on here a while back? Not a problem I'm sure. I only really laugh out loud at the Viz, its as sharp as they come anyone who hasn't tried it should give it a go, this months is a good example.

Roger Mellie and 8 Ace has caused me to almost wee myself on a few occasions!

However I still enjoy the artwork of many many comics, even if I dont laugh my head off at them.

This thread belongs in the main discussion forum, since you're talking about all comics, not just newspaper strips.

I can suggest one newspaper strip though - Hagar the Horrible.

I don't always laugh at the Beano, but sometimes I do really laugh at it. Laura H will no doubt be pleased to hear I've laughed at both Ratz and Johnny Bean, but the funniest strip I remember was a Roger the Dodger where he put a scarecrow on a seesaw and the scarecrow flew off into a refuse lorry. Roger said 'Heh! What a 'rubbish' pal he turned out to be!'

In response to Jonny, this week's Roger was good too - he's raising money (something he seems to do often) but there's a twist. His mum catches him, making him drop all the money, she assumes he's up to no good, so Roger squirms "It's not what it seems!" It turns out he was raising funds for an animal hospital, and I laughed at the bandaged up animals in that final frame - a dog with a pan apparently stuck on its head, a gorilla with a broken leg in a plaster cast sat in a wheelchair, a duck with a bandaged neck, a bull with a bandaged horn (!), and a very embarrassed Roger as he gets praise from his mum! Loved Parkinson the butler's final line in Lord Snooty too: "I could quack-up working for Snooty!" he says after getting attacked by a flock of ducks.

I loved reading comics as a kid, and enjoyed them loads - but I can't remember ever laughing at them, either inwardly or LOL-wise...

I remember finding the short lived 'Acne' very funny, though. Probably because I was too young for it.

Oh, and obviously Viz is proper hilarious, of course.

What exactly is the point of a comic that doesn't make you laugh? It seems to me that it is a contradiction in terms.

That's right. I bet there's a couple of Viz artists out there right now working on pages for Wednesday's deadline, and having a look at comic forums while the ink dries.
