Big Daddy from Buster and Jackpot to appear on the One Show

Big Daddy from Buster and Jackpot comic to appear on the One Show scan provided by me.. 8) don't know when it will be on yet..

Hello Peter
My name is Cris Warren and I am a TV researcher for Icon Films ion Bristol. We produce short films for BBC1’s the One Show. We are currently producing a piece on the sad demise of British wrestling and how the likes of Mick McManus, Kendo Nagasaki and Big Daddy became part of the cultural fabric outside of the ring. I wonder if you might be able to help me source a high resolution scan of the Big Daddy strip that was a feature of Buster comic during the early 80’s. We have permission from the copyright holder - Egmont/Fleetway – to use it on screen, but they do not have copies of the strip in question. I note that your blog about British comic artists features a Mike Lacey/Big Daddy story, would it be possible to get a copy of that from you?
I look forward to hearing from you,

All the very best

Cris Warren

Peter – that’s brilliant and the perfect resolution, too. Thank you so much. I’ve had fun researching this story, Bumpkin Billionaires was one of my favorites (so many strips out of one gag – how to get rid of a £billion. They should have just gone into mortgages!) and I was really interested to see it’s the same artist. I’m also a huge Leo Baxendale fan; I can say hand on heart that Willy The Kid corrupted and inspired me in equal measure as an eight year old so I couldn’t resist trawling through the Grimly Feendish strips on your site – in the name of research, of course.

Thank you once again for all your help,

Very best wishes

Cris Warren

Hi Peter

Thanks very much – a great strip. Pleas do spread the word. I don’t know what the TX date will be, we’re filming this week – hopefully with Mick McManus!! – But as soon as I have a firm date I will let you know.

All the very best

Does he know that Mick McManus appeared in a comic strip? He was in the Johnny Cougar strip for several weeks in Tiger around 1970 or 1971-ish. I don't have those issues any more I'm afraid.

If anyone has an example of what Lew has mentioned could they put the scan up here and I'll pass it on..

I cheekly mentioned that Buster comic would have been 50 years in May and maybe the one show could do a feature.Cris has passed my idea on to the director..so who knows!!!
If you don't ask you don't get..

Thanks Peter – have forwarded this to our director – I’ll let you know!
Best
Cris

Hi Cris

Just an idea for a One show item..

Buster comic which ran fro 40 years and ended in 2000 would have been 50 years old in May...maybe an excuse to do a feature on a very popular comic which merged throughout its 40 years the most comics..

Heres a internet friends website on Buster..

http://www.toonhound.com/fleetway.htm

Its just an idea..

I do like the One show and have even recorded quite a few if its a famous person I like..

thanks for your time Peter

The Buster idea didn't take off for a One show feature shame..though they might do a feature on comics another time..

For May I will try and do 10 blog posts on Buster to celebrate this super comic

That's a shame. Would've been a timely reminder of what we've lost. :(

Hi Peter

You very kindly supplied my colleague Cris Warren with some images last month of Buster’s Big Daddy comic strip. We’ve just finished making another item in the same strand on CB radios and we are looking for images of a comic strip called ‘The CB’ers’ which I believe appeared in Buster around the mid 80’s. I was wondering if you had heard of this comic strip and if you had any jpg images which you might be able to send us. Any help you can provide would be enormously appreciated.

Cheers

David

Hi David

The strip was from Wow comic 5th June 1982 all the way up to the last Wow comic 25th June 1983 issue 56.
I remember reading the first issue..:)
It is actually called KBR (Kid's Band Radio)
The artist who drew it throughout was David Mostyn,
David also drew Whoopee's Snack-man a cover star..
The Dandy's Strange Hill School. Mikey the mouth and Bertie Buncle and his Chemical Uncle.
he drew many others..he has a lot of energy in his drawings..

Send are some scans of KBR
Story from the first issue
A one off appearance on the cover of Wow to advertise a booklet free in the comic..
Also send to you is a letter forum page where readers had created there own chatter..

Let me know when Big Daddy is on the One show and this item is on...wopuld be nice to record it..

Glad to help Peter

Hi Peter

Thanks so much for these. The wrestling item and this item on CB radio will both be on in September. We’ll make sure your name is on the list of contributors to alert once we have a transmission date.

Warm regards

David

Easy to find the CB Radio one : http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... 9_07_2010/
None of the episode descriptions mention wrestling, but the episode for Monday 12 July is already gone, and you said it might have been that one. Oh well.

Yeah, the one show have a habit of pulling in lots of things they don't actually use.

I remember a couple of years ago they contacted a few of us about Gums, for a section on comics, and as well as a picture I provided a short synopsis of how Gums went from Monster Fun to Buster.

When the ep aired, they used a picture (not mine) and Adrian Chiles, who remembered Gums said "it was in a Comic called Monster Fun which only ran for a couple of weeks and folded."
