Why so surprised? He's the only one of those characters still getting new episodes every week.

Admittedly Dredd IMHO is also one of the best characters invented.
But that is not to take away from the others which is why I find it is sad that no-one is using these characters now. Such a waste.
I wonder how many people would give their eye-teeth to see them in print now?

I like 2000AD but can't stand Dredd's character. Some great stories, sure, but a miserable, one-dimensional, fascist bully-boy of a character. He'd never get my vote (even though he's had some of the best stories).
I didn't vote for Charley. One of the greatest strips I've ever read but more the story than the character. The great strength of Charley's War is Charley's just a bloke. Bit of a scrapper but blindly patriotic and constrained by his class. It's the story more than the character.
I would probably have gone for the Leopard from Lime Street but, with that missing, Adam Eterno gets my vote. Alan Moore could have done wonders with that character making an appearance in Swamp Thing.

If such characters were in print now they'd have been "updated" to "better reflect" what "modern comic readers" "really want"... like the time they made some 1960's superhero into a cannibal. Better a dignified death, if you ask me.

I think the idea with Judge Dredd (at least for many of the writers and artists) is that he's the villain while the succession of colourful 'perps' who confront him are the strip's real heroes!
