Comic character postage stamps

This article was in today's Daily Express (but no other tabloid or the I). I presume the comic characters will be British but does anyone know the other characters? (I haven't looked at the Royal Mail website yet).

I have just been looking at the 2012 stamps and they look very enticing. The ten stamps are:

Desperate Dan
Dennis The Menace
Dan Dare
Beryl The Peril
Roy Race
The Four Marys
Buster
The Steel Claw
Twinkle and...

JD himself.

The first day covers look like an investment all by themselves. And they are already getting me excited!

The front covers seem rather random:
Dandy: issue 1, which features Korky
Beano: a late 50s issue with Biffo
Eagle: this one does feature Dan Dare
Topper: early cover with Mickey the Monkey, not issue 1.
Tiger: issue 1, which does feature Roy of the Rovers
Bunty: random early issue, not #1
Buster: Late 60s issue, does feature Buster (not that hard though considering he's on the cover of most issues)
Valiant: issue 1
Twinkle: random issue, not #1
2000AD: issue 1, advertises free gift

I would've expected them all to be either issue 1 or an issue with the featured character on the cover (i.e. a 1974 Beano, 1984 Dandy, and a 1988 Topper)

The 2000AD cover isn't issue 1 - which is probably just as well since it looked pretty unimpressive once the 'space spinner' was removed. On the other hand I think they should have used a foreground image of Dredd that was drawn by Ezquerra or Bolland rather than one that seems to be the work of Cliff Robertson.

Incidentally, does anyone know how many other British comics characters have been featured on stamps before this? Dan Dare and Rupert were definitely used a few years ago.

They look really well done. I will certainly be purchasing a set. A couple of years back I won something from the USA on ebay and the parcel had superhero stamps on it - I still have them somewhere.

I can only think of the Gerry Anderson UK stamps - unlike the US where they have printed loads of comic character (and a few creator) stamps.

Here are Dan Dare and Rupert, issued in 1994:

(I'm assuming these images count as public domain, meaning that they fall outside the normal remit of copyright holders such as the Dan Dare Corporation)

Even the Royal Mail will have had to pay to use the images... :(

Have these stamps been released yet? I googled comics uk to get here but the first result was a site about these stamps and one set gives you a 12 page miniature copy of the first Dandy. Couldn't see a release date but I know they come out this month.
