Advertising Posters
I've recently seen some photographs of old newsagents and they all seem to display advertising posters for the latest comics. I know these were quite common and were used to advertise a new title or a free gift etc., and I think they look really nice. I've searched around and have found a few images of them, these two are found online (the Lot-O'-Fun poster is avaliable for £80!). Does anybody have images of any more of these? They've really nice artwork on them, these two are by Bertie Brown (Lot-O'-Fun) and Reg Parlett (Jester).

Re: Advertising Posters
Here is one for Buster No. 1. It was offered by Compal auctios in the summer of 2010 and someone paid £145 for it. According to the description, the double-sided colour poster measures 10 x 7 ins.

Re: Advertising Posters
I can remember in the mid sixties people standing out outside my school giving out flyers for new comics
Re: Advertising Posters
I remember with DCT where you would get a four-page (pink) flyer heralding the launch of a new comic in their other publications.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-), Fantastic Four (2025-).

Re: Advertising Posters
It wasn't just DCT that did it. IPC also included them in other comics when a new title was launched.SID wrote:I remember with DCT where you would get a four-page (pink) flyer heralding the launch of a new comic in their other publications.

Here's a few more interesting items. Not posters, but IPC's promotional folders for Whoopee and Tornado. Incidentally both comics are undated because they are pre print run copies. Both sold on Compal Comics a few years ago, the Tornado for £121 in Autumn 2011 and the Whoopee for £185 in Winter 2011.

Well, salmon-pink. A different shade to Thomson's inserts:SID wrote:So they did (but not pink).George Shiers wrote:It wasn't just DCT that did it. The first issue of Whoopee wasn't dated anyway. I think it had been delayed perhaps so they didn't put a date on it.George Shiers wrote:Here's a few more interesting items. Re: Advertising Posters
£121 for TV Tornado I could well believe. But the comic you are showing is Tornado from 1979 which I cannot believe.George Shiers wrote:Here's a few more interesting items. But it does take you back. Opening up your existing comic and finding an insert and thinking: "I want to get that!".
Now if there was a book featuring advertising posters/inserts that have been produced over the years. I would certainly want to buy a copy.

Oh whoops - it is just Tornado! I'll edit it, but yes - it did sell for £121!SID wrote:£121 for TV Tornado I could well believe. That would make a good book. I wonder if it could be done - are all the posters still in existence? I'm sure the publishers kept them, but then again many publishers are no longer around.

Bloody hell! I stand corrected. It must be the flyer that did it I suspect.George Shiers wrote:Oh whoops - it is just Tornado! I'll edit it, but yes - it did sell for £121!

Regarding the book, I am surprised that no-one has thought of it.

Re: Advertising Posters
I know D.C Thomson own a copy of everything they publish so it wouldn;t be impossible to find their stuff but I wonder if stuff from Amalgamated Press exists any more, if it did it would only be in private collections surely? I wonder if such a book could be put together through ComicsUK?SID wrote:Regarding the book, I am surprised that no-one has thought of it.
