Well Mark's no longer here to defend himself but if you read the whole thread he was reacting to Digi suggesting that DC Thomson were calling it the 'Last Ever' special as a deliberate lie (or 'fib' as Digi put it). There were no intentions to do another at the time.

If a company changes its mind 12 months later and decides to revive the special it's not a fib is it? Unless you also think that IPC were deliberately lying in 1969 when they folded Eagle, only to bring it back in 1982.

What Digi said was " I hope it sells well enough to make a fib out of its title", which was rather positive, implying that it wasn't a deliberate lie but dependent on sales, that the title would then be rendered a fib, and saying he hoped it did well enough that what has happened would happen.

Beanomark, in his own words, objected to "Digifiend's implication that DCT are seeing how sales of the Last Summer Special go and then go back on their 'word' that it was the last ever, by producing another one next year", which is exactly what has happened, so Digi's "implication" was entirely correct.

There's no comparison between the two events, as you know. How can Eagle merging with Lion be a "lie"?

As we know, a merger between comics is just for appearances sake. It really means one comic has folded. IPC genuinely thought they were publishing the last Eagle in 1969, unaware that it would be revived years later. Now, the 13 years of that gap is a lot wider than the one year between this "last" special and the next, but my comparison is the same. No one thought IPC were lying in 1969, because they weren't. And DCT didn't lie last year, as implied.

Yes, but they didn't sell a special on the strength of it being a historical event "LAST EVER ISSUE OF EAGLE", did they? It just merged with little palaver.

Exactly. Sales of the "Last Ever" Special were so good that another Special has been produced the next year. And, again, Digi said he hoped it "would make a fib out of its title", which is not the same as saying that DCT were lying. (Fib is also a much gentler word than lie, implying it's an unimportant one.)

Digi clarified what he said with this: "If it sells well enough for another one to be done next year, it would no longer be the "last ever", ergo, this year's being called that would be a fib. Simple enough, right?"

As was pointed out to him at the time, it was not a fib.

I don't know why you've dragged it up again as it caused a lot of ill-feeling last year. I've posted in defense of Mark's comments because he's no longer on the forum but I'm not getting involved any further.

Simply because it seems quite amusing that "The Last Ever Dandy Holiday Special" should be followed the next year with a "Back By Popular Demand!" new one, and, with the passage of time (a full year or so), also quite amusing that someone should have taken such absolute umbrage at the very suggestion that this might possibly happen.

That's not quite what happened. I think any "absolute umbrage" last year was solely about the suggestion of a company's dishonesty, not that a comic might produce another special.

Anyway, roll on next Wednesday so that people can talk about the comics!
