I think it's fair enough to say that there is a huge array of talent working at DCThomson on The Beano and The Dandy. Steve Bright, Ken Harrison, Nigel Parkinson, Dave Sutherland and Jamie Smart produce fabulous work week after week. I love 'em!

But I've never, ever been able to understand the appeal of Nick Brennan (Blinky, Crazy for Daisy etc). His work is like something a 7 year old would draw. If anybody doubts me, take a look at his interpretation of 'Nicky Nutjob' (a terrible creation anyway) in the latest Beano - issue 3345.

Rarely have I ever seen anything quite so mediocre in a British comic in all my life. I had to pinch myself that I wasn't imagining things. Beano editor - please don't let this happen again!

I think it's all down to a matter of personal taste. I haven't seen his latest work and he's not my favourite artist, but he has done things in the past that I have thought worked really well. I think he's particularly good at expressing frustration and barely suppressed rage. I also think it's good to have a wide-ranging mix of styles within a publication. keeps the ol' visual interest from becoming jaded.

In comics the only thing that matters is: do the readers like it? And as I understand it the kids love his strips.

I like his work.....and the Nicky Nutjob was great...I like clever ideas...cat..budgie and dog robot in one was a fun original idea. Makes a change from the other strips.

His characters have a jolliness about them...love the bendy legs....Blinky is my favourite of his.....

Brassneck didn't work for me....too used to the other artist of the past .....

I love Blinkey, Noah and all the rest of the strips, my least fave is the guy that does Korky.

I love Nick's work, and I've told him so. I don't however like Stephen White's work terribly - the Darby Doshman series, as well as recycling old scripts, was too like Herg?'s Tintin, and the more recent stuff is just far too wacky.

That said, his Office Hours is a vast improvement on the computer-generated originals. Office Hours still isn't a patch on the Sparky People...

I buy The Dandy for my 6-year old son and both he and his elder brother (who is 8) have absolutely loved the recent Winker Watson stories by Stephen White ... Does anyone know if Winker is planning a return soon ?

In art as in pop music, there is no worst or best. Some people like rap, others detest it,etc,etc...There is no need to go slagging off artists Conor B! Especially one of the Forum Members!!! :x
My reply is-if you think you can do better, try it.
In fact this thread should be deleted as a waste of everybody's time.

Actually, what I'm wondering is why everyone keeps posting here about artists and writers, instead of in the correct forum...

Kev the artist is growing on me. I'm reserving judgement on his writing until I read his Billy and Jumbo story next year!

I also think my art style's taken a while to bed in. When I did my first Bash St story I was adapting from drawing superheroes to drawing comic style (and trying to ghost Mike Pearse's style), and some of the characters look totally unlike themselves.

By the time of An Ickle Bitty Werewolf On Bash St (with the Bash St Werewolves coming to bite your bums) I think I'd got it right.

Then, of course, the Christmas episode saw print, which was the second thing I'd drawn nearly a year earlier, and the likenesses (especially an awful looking Dennis) were all over the place. It was commented on by the folk upstairs.

I've just delivered Pluggy Love for the 2008 annual (includes Numskulls for all the Bash St characters, and pastiche of Edvard Munch's Scream) and am starting drawing Scary Story which incorporates the free gift from that week's front cover (a Jumping Spider) and reintroduces four forgotten classic characters (their initials are BTB, KK, PPTSD and DID).

By the way - Nick Brennan is a misunderstood genius. Especially after a few pints.
