Just watching TV and I was delighted to see a snapshot of "The Victor" pop up as part and parcel of the 150th Anniversary celebrations of the VC. It featured as part of an anecdote by James Magennis' son. (For more details of James Magennis' exploits see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Joseph_Magennis)

He spoke of his pride when on a cold and wet day in Ireland at school when his mates came rushing back from the local newsagent to hold up their copy of "The Victor " to his face and say along the lines of "That's your dad, isn't it?" and Auntie Beeb provided a shot of an appropriately covered Victor.

Now where else has anyone seen a comic turn up in and it has made them chuffed to little mint balls to be a collector?

I suppose this isn't to unusal a place to find comics turn up, but in the South Bank Show feature on Nick Parks (Aardman animation) they showed copies of the Beano (Biffo Bear,Lord Snooty etc) as Nicks first influence was the Beano and he wanted ot be a comic artist when he was a kid. Also seen comics in few big blockbuster movies (Hunt for Red October?) where 2 sailors are fighting over who was hte best Kirby or Mobius version of the Silver Surfer -Other than that only a few music interviews where Boaln and then Bowie ranted on about their hten love of comics - None as meaningful as your find tho re the VC

The borrowers film had a Beryl the peril annual in the background

and the Young Ones had a big argument over a renamed Warlord comic (something like Wardog or so). Rick thought it was politically incorrect to read such stories before realising Viv had actually stolen his comic.

(Speaking of which, when the character Martin Platt started in Corrie, he was a comic collector of sorts. I recall him being shown to have a collection including a Silver Surfer, and comments were made about him buying them. Naturally, as it's soapworld, the writers suddenly forgot about this and he became as bland as all other soap characters who have no hobbies of any kind.)

In the film Notting Hill, a second-hand bookshop specialising in travel books has a copy of Roger Sabin's Comics, Comix and Graphic Novels on open display. Well, it caught my attention in the cinema. My wife told me to shush. Women eh? Priorities all about-face!

Slightly on topic. Did anyone see QI the other week? As Jonathon Ross was on who is probably Britains most famous comic fan some of the questions were comic character related. Needless to say JR got most of these questions right.

Nick Parks is very nearly my neighbour. Maybe I can direct him towards my Beano stuff and grab the gig of writing the next movie. His email is.....?

DCI Tom Barnaby is an "Eagle" fan. I recall a "Midsomer Murders" episode that was top and tailed with discussions about the comic...

ernie and eric are lying in bed ernie is reading the paper and eric is reading the dandy, ernie makes some comment about how he cant believe something that he's reading in the paper and Eric responds with I cant believe this either "desperate Dan has had five cow pies and he's still hungry! and of course the delivery and timing is what sells it , good old Eric M.

I seem to recall that in ?Life on Mars? when the hero DI Sam Tyler went back to his old house and met his mother and his younger self, the boy was reading a copy of the Hotspur

The funny thing about the Eric and Ernie scetch is he is actually reading a Beano with the title changed to Dandy...

This is another one of those comic character rather than comic book, things. I am listening to a repeat of Jonathon Ross' Saturday radio show and have just heard him exclaim "Oh my stars and garters". As many comic fans know this was the catch phrase of the X-mens Beast for many years.
