You certainly do have some caveates, Jim. :D

Okay, I have to two.

The Last Great British Comic to survive is 2000 AD.

The Last Great British Comic to come out in the mold of the traditional comic of the day is Wildcat.

Interesting that you say the music died when Hotspur folded. What about Victor? Especially in the latter part of the 1980s?

Anyway, I do understand where you are coming from, Jim. But personally, I don't think the music has died but simply changed. In the last century, comics were for kids. In this century, they are for adults.

Apart from the newer comics such as Quantum, Shift and The 77, etc.., you have Rebellion releasing old comic strips in the form of graphic novels as well as DC Thomson producing the odd nod to their archives through Commando.

I think the Great British Comic is still here and doing okay.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-), Fantastic Four (2025-).

Sid: Brilliant post and you make a lot of sense but here are my points.

YES 2000AD is the last great British comic that survives.
We agree on this.

Wildcats was indeed a great Brit comic but in my opinion not traditional ie was more like an American mag.

Victor was fantastic but Hotspur was one of "The Big Five" and did interestingly enough end by being part of The Victor as the titles joined.

In the last century, comics were well written pieces of art for teenagers and young adults, today (other than the subscription stuff) the shelfs are filled with nursery comics.

Rebellion are indeed fantastic but this is reprints.

The last great British comic .......
I said before that I thought it was "Starlord"
But a lot of people have said others and I think "Tornado" "Scream" "Eagle 2" may actually all be in the same place.

Just my views and feel free to tell me I am wrong.
Cheers Sid.

The last surviving….yes to 2000AD by some way.
The last launched, my vote would go to Warrior and again, by some way. I never saw it when it came out but was introduced to it a decade or so ago by Colin Noble and boy I think he was right when he said it was by far the best comic of the 80s.

I have to agree, Adam. Warrior was one of the best comics to come out in the 80s (and one of my all-time favourites). To me it was a future version of 2000 AD itself. I was really disappointed when it got cancelled. It was far too soon.

On the plus side, I did buy the set of Marvelman/Miracleman graphic novels that Marvel produced once acquiring the rights to the character many years later. And did anyone watch the V for Vendetta movie? I enjoyed it.

Fair enough, Jim but I'm going to stick with my own logic (less headaches that way  ).

So finally...

My nomination for "Last Great British Comic" - weekly: Wildcat
My nomination for "Last Great British Comic" - last century: Judge Dredd Megazine (Agreed that it's an off-shoot of 2000 AD but I think it has forged it's own identity).
My nomination for "Last Great British Comic" - this century: Spaceship Away (again I think it has proved itself).

Now can I ask this? What was the FIRST Great British Comic? (Please ignore if there's already a thread for this that I may have missed).

Its a great choice and was brilliant so may actually be THE ANSWER.
But was it as good as Starlord is my question?

For my twopenneth, I would definitely say "yes". Starlord and Warrior were aimed at different audiences (the latter being older) so it's difficult to compare. The younger me would have preferred Starlord while the current me would say Warrior.

If only Warrior came out possibly a few decades later. Maybe it would have fared better. In my book, it would certainly give the current 2000 AD a run for its money (though I would get both :D).

A great comic Isslord but as it is based on the original which in turn was based on Battle Picture Weekly and Action.....
I have to be pedantic and not allow it.
However, if you want to go for either Battle or Action from the 70s then both are eligible.
Obviously this is just my point of view and please feel free to disagree.
