Lord Snooty is back!! (well sort of...)

Post by Spencer »

In this week's Beano Nigel Parkinson has drawn a VERY different version of Lord Snooty. In fact, this is Lord Snooty the Third and he is a little more menacing than the previous inhabitant of Bunkerton Towers...

ALSO in this issue the 2nd August news is revealed. It is a charity day called Gnashional Menacing Day where the public are invited to indulge in some sponsored menacing to raise money...

AND it is announced that the issue on sale 30th July will be a bumper birthday issue!!

Well done DCT, much better than the lacklustre Dandy 'celebrations' !

Haven't seen it yet...

"Celebrations" indeed!! All they did was write about stuff no one cared about and stuck it on their website, which has had 116 votes on the poll in two weeks (about 15 of which probably came from myself). Compare this to the Beano's, which has taken around 2 weeks as well.

You kind of got your wish, as Snooty, Doubting Thomas, Big Fat Joe, and Scapper Smith cameoed in David Sutherland's Fred's Bed strip this week. Snooty the Third did not appear in the comic at all.

Snooty III (back again this week) bothers me mainly because it's (IMHO) easy to imagine an update of the original character filling the same function and doing it better.

The new character design doesn't strike me as very distinctive, apart from a by-the-numbers attempt at hip baggy clothing. There doesn't seem to be a consistent personality, either; one week Snooty III is quite menacing when playing indoor sports, the next he's just a tour guide, taking us around his mansion and himself playing straight man to Bea.
I've only seen a few examples of the strip, but does this new Snooty have friends? The old Snooty would have been tiresome alone, but was improved by his pantheon—the twins, Scrapper, Angus the stag, etc.

If he's really gone for good, I like to think that the original Snooty performed the ultimate nose-thumbing to the prejudices of his era's genteel society: settling down with Polly for Bunkerton's first integrated marriage. (-:

Apologies if Nigel Parkinson is reading this and feels I've unduly slighted his plans for the new character.

Maybe Lord Snooty the 1st could re-appear as and old man? He could play a similar role with Snooty the 3rd as Dennis' Granny did in the 80's/90's? Obviously age could have turned him into a mad old man! Perhaps this would be insulting to Snootys legacy though?

Does anyone have the bumper birthday issue? I missed it and would be happy to pay.

Snooty 3 seems to be a very unsympathetic character- he doesn't have anything for kids to associate with.

other than that i think that the beano is on a bit of a high at the moment- the general level of scripting and artwork is as good as i can remember in recent memory....

He must be dead, if he was still alive Snooty III couldn't be a Lord. It's a title inherited from the father when he dies. Thus Snooty can only appear in stories set in the past (like the Fred's Bed strip) or in photos (which has happened twice so far). Would love to see a storyline where he visits an old people's home and finds Snitch and Snatch, who would point out that Snooty III's snobbery would've embarressed Lord Marmaduke. He, after all, played with street urchins in Ash Can Alley!

Polly disappeared in the mid 1980s, probably to avoid being accused of racism - she was black, and drawn in black, since there was no colour in the strip at the time. I think Snooty's more likely to have married Rosie, he's known her longer (the other girls only joined the gang in 1950, Rosie was in the first story in 1938).

It's more complicated than that. As I recall, Lord Snooty I was the SON of the Earl of Bunkerton (and probably had the rank of Viscount in his own right as his father's second title).

The absence of Snooty III's father probably suggests that he is the substantive Earl of Bunkerton, but on the other hand Snooty I's father never appeared in the original strip, Aunt Mat being the adult authority figure.

Aunt Vicki being her equilvalent in Lord Snooty III's strip. She's only appeared once though, ordering our Lord to take a bath after he got literally covered in mud!

Both Snooty's being lookedafter by an aunt indicates that they are orphans, so although never mentioned, the likelihood is I'm right. Hardly a thing they'd mention in a comic though, is it? Death isn't funny!
