Need help identifying a comic
Re: Need help identifying a comic
The comic you refer to is James Bond Agent 007 - it featured several non-Bond stories, including some Simon Smart. http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/comics/se ... 3?s=comics
Thank you HM Government! I found the info on the MI6 website, of all things.

Off hand I can't remember whether he drew Midge or not, Bill Lacey certainly did. Twisty I would tend to think not.Hellstone wrote:Did Sutherland do other sports strips for Bullet? The art style seems reminiscent of Midge (a strip about a weightlifter) and Twisty (the fotballer with the homing pigeons). Do you know if he did those as well?colcool007 wrote:At last one that I do know. The story was originally published in the UK as They Can't Tame Tasker in Bullet in 1977. The artist is Pete Sutherland.

Re: Need help identifying a comic
Just checked and Pete Sutherland did draw Midge as well as Lacey. As to Twisty he didn't do the first series but he may have done one of the later ones. (My collection of Bullet is too well stored away to get out the issues and check).

Re: Need help identifying a comic
Not 100% sure, but I always thought that Barrie Mitchell drew Twisty. The stylistic similiarity between Twisty and Look Out For Lefty always made me think it was the same artist.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

Yes the comic book that featured "Simon Smart" in Sweden was James Bond.Digifiend wrote:The comic you refer to is James Bond Agent 007 - it featured several non-Bond stories, including some Simon Smart. http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/comics/se ... 3?s=comics

I could add that one of the recurring cast of the comic are Inspector Tim Bannion, if that helps to identify the comic. And the copy was IPC,Hellstone wrote:Another question: in Swedish comic mags in the 1970s, there was a British comic called "Simon Smart" about a criminal and antihero who looked as a bum with long filthy hair, but was a genius able to escape the long arm of the law, time and again.

Thank you, colcool007 and Kashgar.
Digifiend and Sir-L -- "Simon Smart" was in the Swedish Buster comic and, I think, Serie-Nytt as well.

Any chance it was Zarga from Buster?Hellstone wrote:Another question: in Swedish comic mags in the 1970s, there was a British comic called "Simon Smart" about a criminal and antihero who looked as a bum with long filthy hair, but was a genius able to escape the long arm of the law, time and again.

Phil -- thanks, but no, "Simon Smart" was an old man with long hair and a facial stubble. And a trenchcoat, IIRC. Looked like a real loser, but somehow always managed to escape the law.

That means it would seem the same story appeared in three publications in one country. Same publisher?Hellstone wrote:Digifiend and Sir-L -- "Simon Smart" was in the Swedish Buster comic and, I think, Serie-Nytt as well.
Re: Need help identifying a comic
Same publisher, Semic Press, different stories. At least that's what I assume without having seen what stories that occured in Serie-Nytt or Buster. Usually when one feature did appear in different publications it would have been different stories, then again if the timeframe was big between the publications then the same story could appear in several publications, years apart.Digifiend wrote:That means it would seem the same story appeared in three publications in one country. Re: Need help identifying a comic
I didn't necessarily mean the same specific series of the story - i.e. Billy the Cat from The Beano and the same character's appearance in Buddy is an instance of the same story appearing in two comics, even if it wasn't the same series of the story. Pansy Potter in The Beano and Sparky is another example.
Thanks for confirming that they're the same publisher anyway, that probably does mean that it was a case of different series' of the same story in different publications.

Another one
Swedish title: "Mordet i den röda ladan" (Translation: Murder in the red barn), a 16 page "one-shot" about the Red Barn Murder in Polstead, Suffolk, England.
Does anyone know it's original title, the creators and where it was published?
And another one
Swedish title: "Den onskefulla ön" (translation: The evil island) an 8 page story about an agent by the name of Harry Craig on a mission to locate a missing submarine, the Stentor.
Is this a "one-shot" or is it part of a "Harry Craig" feature?
And again:

For some reason I've gotten into myhead that there was a British version of the american comic "The Frogmen", about the divers Steve Randall and Jim Collins. Could this be right or just a case of my imagination running wild?
Ps. I could get some scans if that would help.

I don't know if it's the same story but AP's Thrilling Picture Library no.171 (May 1957) featured "The Mystery of the Red Barn" by Leonard Matthews and Robert Forrest.Sir-L wrote:Another one

Could very well be. It's definitly based on the same story anyway.philcom55 wrote: [...]

Here's the first page of the story. It could be edited to fit the format of the Swedish comic book.

Re: Need help identifying a comic
It appears the "Simon Smart" feature has simularities with the comic "Charlie Peace", only a bit darker* in tone. Any ideas what comic that would fit that discription?
[Edit]
*darker compared to this "Charlie Peace" episode
The episodes published in Sweden has a different artist that the one in the example in the link above, was there another artist/artists on the "The Elusive Charlie Peace"?
