10 Weirdest Girls' Comic Stories

Post by fústar »

Hey lads and lassies. Haven't been around here for a while.

I come, cap in hand, looking for your help. I'm just about to start work on a magazine article about the 10 Weirdest Girls' Comic Stories. This is an offshoot from some Girls' comic writing I did on the blog. Some of you may have read it, but if not the archive can be found here:

http://www.fustar.info/tag/girls-comics/

The long and the short of it is that I'd like the fine folk of Comics UK to suggest what should make the cut. Flights of Flopear is a given (!), but what else?

Get suggesting.

Ta muchly.

Tank Girl is an obvious choice and is the film the worse comic related film ever?

And I quote Mrs colcool "The Garden Gnomes that came to life and nicked everyone from the house!" Sounds weird enough to me! Believed to be from an Annual either Tammy, Misty or similiar.

grumpy, Things like Tank Girl not on the radar. Really only interested in Bunty, Misty, Mandy (et al) tales. Where it's not clear if the "weirdness" is wholly intentional.

colcool, Sounds intriguing. Details (if possible) please!

Sally had some good girls stories in not sure if they're weird enough though.

Fustar, that's all the details that she gave me, but it should fall between '76 and '84 so not too many annuals to search through.... :o

They most certainly are. "Legion of Super Slaves" is top of the list.

Keep 'em coming.

Stories of a Sci-Fi bent are particularly welcome. Thanks.

I beleive there was one in Misty about a pair of tower blocks that formed a time-link between modern times (the 1970's) and the Blitz. Of course tower blocks didn't exist during the Blitz but such details weren't allowed to stand in the way of the story XD,

Can't even remember it's name but enquring on mistycomic.co.uk ought to help.

The story was called The Sentinels and the link was to a parallel universe where Nazi Germany had won World War Two. It started in issue 1 and ran for about 12 weeks. It was reprinted in one of the annuals, either 83 or 84 IIRC.

You see, to me, that's not a weird story, that's a good story. And, that being the case, I think one of the troubles with a strand like this is that 'weirdness' like many other qualities is very much a subjective matter and pretty well open to endless interpretation.

I absolutely agree. In fact, I had been thinking of asking Colin to summarise the story for me. It would be easier for him than for FM because one of his daughters would seem to have acquired the full run of Misty. However, now that I am about to start an appropriate thread, perhaps he would like to be an early contributor with just this story. That way we can all enjoy it.

Actually I copied its rather eerie splash page a while ago on Audiate's 'Looking for Judy comics' thread. Here it is again:

Happy to summarise the story, but you'll have to wait a few months as the comics are in the UK and I won't be getting my hands on them again until September. It's actually Mrs colcool's collection of Misty. It's just that one of the daughters loves it as well and as the comics were aimed at young girls, then it must be her comics instead of her Mum's! Try arguing with that kind of logic!

V short synopsis is that one of the flats opened a portal into a parallel Earth where the Nazis had won WW2 and occupied Britain. One girl tumbled onto the portal and ended up aiding the resistance against the Nazis powers. This may explain why FM thought it was a WW2 story.

A more in-depth synopsis is available on Cap'n Storm's blog. So just click the link thingy here and he's even got a couple of pics as well! :D

How to explain the gnomes story? Hmmm... well, I think it was in the same annual as the one about the Locusts and St Swithin's Day (I do know the story to that one if anyone is interested). The story itself started with the common theme of Mum, Dad, and their 2 children (1 boy, 1 girl!) move to a creepy old house in the middle of nowhere. On arrival, one of the children (I think the boy, but that could be me being sexist) remarks on the horrible, ugly gnomes dotted around the garden. The following day the family discover that the house has been sold before (Can't remember how many times), and that every family that has moved in has mysteriously disappeared (dun dun dun! :!: ). One night, the girl (I think) woke up in time to see her brother being taken into the chimney (Not sure if my memory's finally broken under the strain or it really was the chimney?!) by one or more of the horrible ugly gnomes, and she can hear her parents voices coming from the fireplace. Then the gnomes get hold of her as well. Cue end of page, and the next page has an estate agent showing a new family around the same house, and mentioning that the last family disappeared...

Definitely weird! And it did not have the ubiquitous happy ending which is probably why I remember it at all. Hope that jogs some-ones memory as to what the story was called and/or where it could be found.
