Yes! `Grumpy` got it, "World Cup Willie" by Lonnie Donegan. By 1966 he was well out of favour in UK pop music! I reckon the choice of Donegan for the 1966 World Cup Song was made by the same idiots who chose Kenneth McKeller for the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest!
A Face unclouded by thought.
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
Ah but they redeemed themselves twelve months later with Dagenham's Finest, Sandie Shaw, our first Eurovison win, and not at all because of her very short flesh-coloured see-through mini dress... Yes, 1967 was a lot different to 1966...alanultron5 wrote:...the same idiots who chose Kenneth McKeller for the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest!

Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
They had to NP the Kenneth McKellar choice made the News with massive criticism of the choice! McKellar was chosen by Stuart Wood who was head of BBC Scotland! This man really lived in the past and knew Zilcch! about 1960s pop music!
The BBC govenors had Wood `demoted` after the debacle! and younger producers set up Sandie Shaws singing the five UK entrants on the Rolf Harris show!
It was a similar mind-set at PYE records where Lous Benjamin (The Managing Director) was also woefully out of touch with the current pop scene who thought Lonnie Donegan would be `appropriate` for 1966's world cup song! Benjamin was so `out of touch` his archaic style ran PYE into bankruptcy by the late 70s!
My actual fave world cup song is Scotland's 1974 "Easy, Easy" written by Martin & Coulter. It is a superb `Glam-Rock` style stomper! Forget the lyrics-just listen to the sound of it!!

Ah! “Yah-ba-dab-ba-do we’ll support the boys in blue†they don’t write ‘em like that any more
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
It didn't turn out to be so Easy, Easy, as they failed to advance from their group on goal difference, but at least on their way home they could hold their heads up, knowing that nobody had beaten them, and reflect on the truth in the title of the then current Nick Smith serial in The Hornet, It's Goals That Count - All Over The World.alanultron5 wrote:Scotland's 1974 "Easy, Easy"

Life in Dagenham must certainly have been tough way back then. Hit records and TV appearances galore and still Sandie Shaw couldn't afford a pair of shoes. Now we discover that her meagre funds would only run to half a dress. She should have stuck to radio to avoid such embarrassment.NP wrote:Ah but they redeemed themselves twelve months later with Dagenham's Finest, Sandie Shaw, our first Eurovison win, and not at all because of her very short flesh-coloured see-through mini dress.
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
Kenneth McKellar - I didn't realsie that, dear lord a lovely man and a great singer in his chosen field but what were they thinking about then ?- Wasn't Lonnie Donaghan Scottish ? the turncoat doing the World Cup Willie song lol (actually I don't remember that song at all, but pestered my Dad to get me a WC Willie tshirt - which he did ) - 1974 we were unlucky in that we (Scotland) should have beaten an ageing Brazil team and who'd a thunk Yugoslavia would hit 9 past a truely awful Zaire team and knock us out on goals - pity we didn't learn from that because as bad as 78 was (as we were rated then to do well) we actually got knocked out again by one goal (not an excuse though, the best teams got through). I loved the"East Easy" Scotland song (lyrics and tune) but my fav was the "I have a dream" that's when we realised we were never going to do anything in World Football anymore so lets just enjoy it - how right we were!!. I'd imagine your all getting excited for Sunday. Its a BIG GAME for you lads I just hope it doesn't go to penalties again lol - enjoy and (honestly) good luck.
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
Well this match is proving to be a goal fest. We've pulled one back from 2-0 down - and it should've been 2-2, but the ref just waved play on after ball rebounded back out of the net!
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
It doesn't matter that England should have been on the plane home 5 minutes before that "goal" (shocking English defence) but that has to be the worst refereeing decison I have ever seen a total outragous and would have changed the game 100% - I think it'll spur you on to win it though - get Crouch on he'll get you a goal - how did the ref not see that goal!!!
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
The whole world could see that it was a goal without the replay except the officials, funny that.
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
England cheated out of a goal now it's 3-1.

Where's Captain Hurricane when you need him?
Re: THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD
Nightmare - you're lucky it was only 4-1 - the best team won by a country mile but the "unseen goal" was just a shocking decision (and to be fair altohugh it could have changed the game I really doubt it). Englands defense was pitiful. Good news though we can all pick up the "Roy of the Rovers World Cup Special" for 50p in the bargin bins from Monday.
