Dandy-Beano Summer Special 1963

A copy of the first Dandy-Beano Summer Special from 1963, in fine condition, just sold on Ebay for £1371.00!! Is this a record? Does this special normally go for this kind of money, or is this an outlier? Are there very few around in this condition?

This is silly money....the Summer specials were great, but these prices are artificially inflated. Still, I suppose someone sees this as an investment, or an especially valuable childhood memory.

The most I have ever paid is 3 quid for a comic, 20 quid for an annual.

I've never heard of a summer special reaching this price before..it's almost certainly a record for the subject in question.

If I had 1,300 quid, I doubt if I'd buy any UK comic with it......except maybe the entire original artwork to BEANO number one, or something unattainable like that.

Some of the pages in the special were reprints from the comic..

The most I spent is £40 for Buster number 1 and that came with Buster number 2 and 9 other early Busters...

Wasn't the whole thing Beano and Dandy reprints? At least that's what The History of the Beano says. The only thing different was that they were coloured in and the text captions were modernised on adventure stories such as General Jumbo. Once the two comics each got separate summer specials the following year though, they used new material in them.

High price for a bunch of reprints. Should be a two digit amount, considering its age and the fact it's the first summer special for the two titles. Over £1000 is way too high though, despite that fact.

Threads merged. I would not have been surprised to see this Special hit three figures, but four? Now, that is some serious collector.

Given that this usually sells for about £500 in fine condition, I am staggered to see no less than 6 bidders at the £800 mark. I think we will have to accept that this was not simply a bidding frenzy between two avid collectors (as I first thought) but a sea-change in how this comic is regarded.

Interestingly the rarer-still Beano 1964 special went for £425. That was probably the one that the bidders should have gone after.

These specials and the ones that followed are of a high quality. I remember as a kid buying the 1973 special while on holiday and being blown away seeing the glossy colour pages. I poured over it for ages.

In all the specials I have, my favourite story was in one of the more recent ones in which the Bash Street Kids are transported into our own world, changing in appearance to become fairly conventional looking (e.g. Plug is still a bit ugly but nothing like his regular face)

Ah well, at least while all eyes were on the Beano action last night I managed to nip in and get the very, very rare Argonauts issue of Classics Illustrated that was also on ebay.

What, so the Bash Street Super Kids story (which was revealed to be Danny's dream, so it sounds like that not what you're referring to) in one of the Beano annuals wasn't the only time they did that then?

Hi Phil! I've got one of those facsimilies for the Argonauts already and this is coming from a reputable source (over 1500 positive feedbacks, 100% record and money back guarantee) so should be OK (as far as you can ever hope from ebay). Ended at £640.

I've never understood the history of those copies. How did he make money on them? I don't recall newsagent distribution. (Another thread for another day?)

A very interesting discussion. Actually, can anyone clarify what was on the covers of all the 1960s Beano summer specials - there doesn't seem to be a website showing them, or perhaps I'm missing it? It sounds like some are rarer than others, but which is which?

1969 was a 'giant' Biffo arm coming out of the sea.....there was another one with Biffo with a huge stick of rock......the first one [1963] was a bizarre analglam with Korky and Biffo sharing the cover : with an equally-bizarre 'Biffo fish' gracing the cover. The back covers of course cleared up the 'mystery riddles' of the front cover optical novelty images.

It may have been the Bash Street Kids special around 1998. They did it again the following year. Unfortunately my copies are not accessible. Can anyone else help?
