GARTH IS BACK

Post by stevezodiac »

There's an article in today's Daily Mirror announcing its return on Monday. It seems like they will be reprints though as it says "the heroes old adventures are set to enthral new readers and nostalgia fans." Also there is a new strip starting tomorrow called Simon's Cat. I don't know if they will be ditching any of the current strips - there's no room for additional strips unless they get rid of Scorer which takes up two strips' space. Maybe he'll move to the sports section. I can't put the article on here as I now have a new laptop but can't put my scanner onto it as the scanner is eight years old - I have tried downloading new drivers from the Lexmark site but no joy (I'm not a genius with pcs).

The lady with the cat reminds me of Mary Tyler Moore from the Dick Van Dyke show. Shame there isn't an example of the strip.

Here's the "simon's cat" website...it's an existing property which has been in short youtube films, and a couple of books. You can watch the films on the site and see the style of artwork

Looks ok. Was worried it would be an ultra modern looking strip but it looks quite old fashioned.

When The Sun added Wallace & Gromit, George and Lynne wound up going website only, and has now ended (the website's cartoons section only includes Shadows now). Maybe the Mirror will do the same with whatever it gets rid of. I reckon Horace and Mandy are more likely to get the chop though, rather than Scorer.

Er, didn't Garth come back about a year-18 months ago? It was on the website and full colour, and the first strip was set in the 20's in the arctic.

Simon's cat is hilarious! There's been two books, the second of which still ought to be easy to find in Smith's etc in the humour section. There's no text at all, which must make selling it to foreign countries rather profitable.

Is Scorer only uploaded monthly on the Mirror's website? I had a look earlier and the last strip available is the end of January.

No idea. I'm, just going by what's in today's paper, which has Ulrika telling Dave they'll live "happily ever after" followed by a big THE END in the corner of the strip.

Tsk. I'd assumed the most recent Scorer on the website would be the one in today's paper. Why on Earth weren't they keeping it updated? :?

Fantastic news of course, and its going to be great to have a daily fix just like back in the 70's but am wondering - if they are reprints, and of tales that have never been collected before, will we be seeing a graphic novel at some point?

I hope so: though I doubt if they will reprint [in the newspaper] some of the more 'erotic' stories from the very early 70s MIRROR, which were alarmingly sexist by today's standards, with much female nudity that [almost] breached the limits of 'public decency'.

There used to be lots of er,'intimate' encounters between Garth and assorted beautiful gals he encountered [some were alien, if I recall properly]. One story that sticks in the memory especially vividly featured fully-formed beautiful women hatching from alien 'eggs' with their intellect as well as their 'aesthetic qualities' intact: fantastic sense of eerie otherworldiness within these tales, Frank Bellamy's striking artwork struck a chord with me in more ways than one first time around.

I doubt if the 'eggs' story will be repeated in today's PC climate [didn't the Mirror also used to feature Page 3 gals in the 70s, before banishing them?] however it would be great if it reappeared in book format.

I have a compendium of MIRROR strips in a very unusual book with strips of all types, and it features some early strips from the 40s featuring GARTH, which I wasn't so struck on: that early 70s revamp was a total 'clean slate' job.

Indeed.
A good game to play is get the "Daily Mirror Of Garth" book and the Titan collections and compare and contrast which panels have been doctored to cover "bits" up or, in some cases, complete panels removed entirely
