What comics did you buy today?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Car boots are fantastic for getting comics/annuals at bargain prices. In the eyes of the seller they're just items which have been lying around the house for too long, you can often beat them down to 50p or even less if you mumble some nonsense about the condition, or someone across the field selling it for half the price.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
From a secondhand shop in St. Ives I bought The Broons and Oor Wullie's More Classics From The Fifties for £3, from Kim's Antiquarian and Secondhand bookshop in Arundel I got Enid Blyton's The Ship Of Adventure (First edition [1950] in a very good dustwrapper) for £40, I won the 1950 (Jan-June) bound volume of Radio Fun from the latest Compal auction for £44 + 10% and p&p, and from phil-comics's June auction on eBay I won all the pre-ban issues of Action, apart from issues 1 and 2, which I already had, for £112 + p&p. The bound volume has already arrived, and the comics should come tomorrow with any luck. Inevitably, I don't have much of my holiday pocket money left.

I got a "Wizard Story Book" today, having not really looked at it properly and assuming it was related to the DC Thomson Wizard, it's actually a nursery book from what looks to be around the late 50's or maybe up to 1961 at a push.
And also a wartime Sexton Blake library.

Back to the Mighty Heroes annual and I've been going spare with this. I'm sure I have one of these with Hero Man in it and a barbarian back up story but can't find it. Can anyone confirm if this could from the same series. Hero Man L'Inexorable, as he is know in the French comics is, I think, originally Spanish. Look forward to confirmations or corrections. Ta.

That's the Mighty Heroes Annual 1984, the character is called "Astro Man" in it and the story appears to be the final part(s?) of a serial. One character is initially just called "The Asian girl" and only later is her name revealed and it's implied she was rescued from a prison earlier in the story.
The backup story is called "The Fearless Roldan"
Oh yeah also the annuals are published by a company called Opal Quill who are based in Spain. They did another one (http://blog.crystal-knights.co.uk/2011/ ... -weird-un/) with one strip that has spanish-sounding names in it's credits.
I'll try and knock out a blog entry about both Mighty Heroes books at the weekend.

Just got Action Comics no.1!
Unfortunately it's not the first appearance of Superman!
But it's not the British comic with Hookjaw either.
This is the British one with Frank Frazetta's Thunda:

...No I've never heard of it either.
(Nice cover though!)

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Yesterday, while browsing in my local second-hand bookshop (always a reliable source of annuals, and occasionally comics), I discovered a whole bookshelf packed full of old DC Thomson and Fleetway books. As well as the usual suspects like Dandy, Beano, Broons, etc. there was Cor!!, Shiver and Shake, Buster, Knockout, Jackpot, Beezer, Topper, Sparky... I'd never seen so many in my life! Sadly, I couldn't afford to buy more than two or three, and I had to restrict myself to two Dandys and a Dennis the Menace. Given that I don't yet have a complete collection myself, I really can't go starting new ones...

"Just got Action Comics no.1!"
Phil, I've had that comic for years now and there is a #2. It is good, isn't it?

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I received this week's Beano and last week's Dandy in the mail this morning (I should get this weeks Dandy later on this week) and bought Comic Heroes issue 5 at my local newsagent.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
This week's Beano and last week's Dandy? That's odd, because they come out on the same day, so they ought to have been the issues for the same week.
