Lindy Annual.

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

Lindy Annual.

Post by matrix »

In respect to the Lindy Annual that has just popped up on the site home page , the annual is dated 1977 , according to records Lindy only ran from june 75 , until nov 75.

Could the date be a misprint? Or does anybody know why they would release an annual after the comic has been discontinued two years earlier?

Has that happened to other titles?

Very much so - in fact comics that didn't live on as annuals for years after the weekly title came to an end were very much the exception. Some even carried on appearing for ten years or more (for example the regular Bunty and Mandy Annuals only came to an end a couple of years ago!).

Thanks Phil i am learning a new everyday ! :)

Do you think the reason for continuing was public demand , by that i mean maybe the weekly circulation was not worth the print , but still had readers writing in regarding the title?

Do you happen to know how many Lindy Annuals that there were dates etc , i cannot find very much info on the net.

I'm not sure public demand had anything to do with titles like 'Hurricane', for instance, reappearing as annuals years after they were cancelled. I'd assume it was a way of cashing in on some repackaged reprints, but many of them did have quite a bit of new material. Maybe it was an excercise in retaining copyright? Or maybe they just wanted some addittional annuals as they knew they were a solid seller at Christmas? Actually, my money's on that last option...

Yes, editors have told me it was simply that the annuals sold well enough to continue publishing them. Same for holiday specials (such as Whoopee) which continued after the weekly had folded.

Thankyou for the replies that sorts that out ! I can understand that happening to a longer running title but Lindy only had twenty comics issued ,maybe it was quality rather than quantity , are there any Lindy readers out there?

I will never forget walking into the living room on christmas morning seeing my santa sack bulging with all the latest annuals , what a sight! :)

Maybe they had left over strips or planned and made the annuals before they knew the comic was gonna close. Because i know they plan the beano annuals long before they actually go on sale so your never really see any really new characters and their strips appearing in the annuals.

No, Star-Lord had annuals published in 1979-1981, but the actual comic folded in October 1978. That was pretty obviously just an excuse to get another 2000AD related annual out there for Christmas (aside from anything else, some of the strips featuring characters like Strontium Dog were clearly knocked up by artists who wouldn't have worked on the ongoing series in 2000AD or Star-Lord). There was a Hurricane Annual issued for 1974 when the comic itself ended in 1965!

I have a copy of the Lindy annual 1977 (the only year they had an annual) and it is a bit of an oddity.
For a start it's paperback rather than laminated board covers and although it was issued as 1977, inside the copyright states 1975, which leads me to believe they put off issuing the annual for a year (possibly due to the weekly comic's untimely demise?). Most of the stories appear to be reprints from old picture libraries (like Schoolgirl's, Princess, etc.) and a reprint from the Princess Tina weekly.
Funnily enough I also have a copy of the Sandie annual 1977 which is also paperback (though having just checked the annuals gallery you already know this!!).

I don't have any Lindys but I do have a number of Jinty & Lindys, and it's worth remembering that the Lindy logo remained quite prominent there for much longer than the original title lasted. Here, for example, is the issue for 26th February 1977 - months after the 1977 Annual would have gone on sale.

I have the Cor!! comic annual 1984, a good decade after the weekly's demise in 1974. That ever-reliable source, Wikipedia, tells me that the very last one was dated 1986.

(I picked it up in a charity shop recently. I was actually after the Beano annual next to it, but the Beano was 60p and the Cor!! was 40p, so I figured I might as well.)
Help! Help! We're being held prisoner in a signature factory!

Thanks helsbels does sound a bit of an oddball , earlier i had only clicked on the pop up on the home page. :)

I wonder why would they use reprints from Princess etc, were the weekly comics connected to them?

I have an interest in Lindy as i have the Lindy summer special that is dated 1975.

Thankyou Phil for the scan , i was aware that Lindy was included in the Jinty title but not for that long after Lindy finished.

Princess's only link to Lindy is that they're from the same publisher.

To add to Philcom's first point, a couple of other examples, Whizzer and Chips closed in 1990 but had annuals to 1994, Beezer closed in 1993 but had annuals to 2003. Buster is an exception, as it lost it's annual in 1994, but the comic continued until Christmas 1999, so it didn't live on as an annual.

Add to that Warlord finished in 1986, but the annuals kept going until 1991. Hotspur finished in 1981, but the annuals also went on to 1991 and Victor folded in 1992 but the annual went for another year and was last published in 1993.
