What comics did you buy today?

I went to the junk Shop in Greenwich (Royal Greenwich i should say) and after sorting out a nice pile of Rover and Rover and Adventure comics I decided to take them to the side of the counter to count them but out of the corner of my eye saw some shelves in shadow in the corner with what looked like more comics (or story papers for the pedants). Sure enough there was a bit of a goldmine so I abandoned my original would-be purchases and instead delved into this new treasure trove and purchased every issue of Tiger & Hurricane from 1966 plus:-

Hotspur 24 10.2.34, 73 19.3.35, 79 2.3.35, 80 9.3.35, 81 16/3/35

New Hotspur 520 4.10.69 and 521 11.10.69 complete with free gift Football Club Colours in near mint condition as were these two issues.

Adventure 965 27.4.40, 966 4.5.40

The Skipper 136 8.4.33, 189 14.4.34, 198 16.6.34, 199 23.6.34, 217 27.10.34, 224 15.12.34, 226 29.12.34, 270 2.11.35, 272 16.11.35, 305 4.7.36.

plus a copy of Comrades issue 22 dated 21.4.1894

All for a pound each minus a generous discount. I'll go back for the Rovers after Christmas - some had some nice Bill Ritchie Spadger covers.

Looking through the comics (readers voice: "story papers!") above I found a rare advert for Magic comic and a couple of rarely seen Allen Morley strips one from Hotspur and one from The Skipper:

A short lived title so possible to work out what issue the gift came with via the on sale date. Allan Morley was very prolific - I'd never heard of those strips before.

Then you haven't read Dandy-Beano: An Alphabet of Fun. Wishbone Wuzzy appears, under the name Wuzzy Wiz. He was in the Dandy, drawn by a different artist and looking very different.

I'm pretty sure I saw the Alphabet of Fun book recently in one of those discount book shops - but I just don't have the space to buy large books anymore.

If Wishbone Wuzzy appeared under a different name, with a different look and drawn by a different artist would I be considered a sceptic if I was to ask how one can be sure its the same strip?

"That's not Captain America its Spiderman only he has a different costume, a different name and is drawn by Kirby rather than Ditko" - see what I mean?

Today I got 6 months worth of The Champion bound, from 1949. I'd been looking forward to following along with serial stories, but it appears that by this time they'd fully adopted the DC Thomson "every part complete" style. In fact, it's barely distinguishable from contemporary issues of Adventure or The Wizard!
Oh well, they were pretty cheap

Surely they are still a joy to own? I prefer the one-off stories - like the text Tough of The Tracks which would have a continuing thread but a complete story in each issue. Even in the sixties I never really bothered with the continuing stories in, say, Buster and Valiant but only read the funnies, Charlie Peace or Captain Hurricane. I suppose it stems from not knowing if i'd get the next issue. His Sporting Lordship was somewhere in between and very enjoyable.

If I have a bound collection then I prefer cliffhanger endings (as in The Boys' Friend or Boys' Journal) or else longer complete stories (as in Union Jack or The Halfpenny Marvel). The Thomson style of a 'serial' with every part also a mini-story just annoys me somehow. Though it's probably because I read through them in one go, rather than waiting a week between parts!

Speaking personally, even with collected runs I always prefer to leave some time between each installment as that's the way they were intended to be read. The some thing applies to box sets of TV shows.

I never read an issue of victor but had to grab victor annuals 1969,1970,1979,1987,1988 & Warlord Annual 1989 for £10 from a charity shop
