The most recent bargain was £1.00 for last year's Dandy annual at my local Sainsburys.

Another one that comes to mind was I got the entire set of Thunder comics cheaply (though I cannot remember the price) a number of years back from the old Book and Magazine Collector. Though it was more the fact that I had bagged an entire collection rather than just the price.

I got the first Beezer Annual for £7 in lovely condition when i bought it but then the spine came off. I still have it and when it is worth it I will probably get it put back on again.

Oh yeah, my first encounter with Dan Dare was the titan reprint of Marooned on Mercury, which I got for 1p! There was no sticker to say it was that cheap, so I was expecting to pay the full price

English comic bargains pop up regularly in Australasia as only five people are left with an interest in them over here. This weeks bargain, 300+ issues of Chick's Own, Playbox, Jingles and Rainbow for equivalent of 35 pounds.

That is a good buy Matthew, what about condition? Did you pick them up at an auction? If so do they often sell british comics? To be honest I hav'nt had much luck in Aus, not that ive been all over looking, and some are switched on I found some 'Treasures' the other day but they wanted if I remember right about nine dollars each.

Matrix, some of the comics have edge foxing and creasing, some folded pages but overall most were in pretty decent condition. Probably been sitting in someone's attic for sixty years. I bought them on ebay, they had been bought at local auction house recently and given as a gift to someone who didn't want them. I've picked up a lot of cheap large lots here in OZ and also New Zealand where there really only seems to very few people interested in them.

Bruce, great looking sites! some good comics you have for sale there but the postage is a killer...I try to buy large lots locally that I can jump on a train or tram and pick up.

That was definately a good buy then Matthew. I guess it depends what you are looking for as well.

When I was in Auckland a few years ago I took some of my summer specials to a comic dealer who told me they were worth next to nothing he said "nobody wanted them", so sounds like it hasnt changed much.

I remember there were some great collectable shops in Invercargill when I was on holiday there a few years ago, unfortunately I wasnt in the market for buying at the time, not sure if they are still there?

Hmm, once I got a great big stack of The Wizard (1970 onwards comic version, including some early issues, lowest number was 5, I think), Tiger (mostly 80's, though some from the 70's and one from 1969) and Roy of the Rovers (maybe about 150-200 issues including the complete 1981/2) for £30. They were in a pawn shop, and the Wizards had been on sale individually the week before (I was going in to make an offer on the box as a job lot). Of course, when I saw them all bunged into big plastic bags with price tags on the knot, I nearly had his arm off (then had to rush out of town and bring the car in to load them up, wondering if I was dreaming).

He also had a big stack of 80's 2000AD's for £30, but I left them for somebody else.

Oh I also got about 100 Bunty's from the 90's for about £5 once, I had to grab them during lunch break at work.

I keep meaning to get some of these loose collections in order and have them bound. One day!

One of my best bargains was from Arthur's comic shop in Glasgow some 10 years ago. I was buying a few issues of 1970's comics when Arthur mentioned a bag of comics I could have. Looking for some extra reading on the train back to Edinburgh I bought the bag for about a fiver I seem to remember - it was full of 40-50 1970's 'FREE GIFT ISSUES' including Whoopee's and Shiver and Shakes etc so didn't have to mull it over too long.. These were amongst a load of bags Arthur had picked up from Denis Gifford's collection which was sold after he sadly died - (another great comic memory is reading Denis' books as a kid and amazed at the size of his comic collection, which as a kid I could only dream of. Sad the collection never stayed in one place, as Arthur was saying).
Most of the comics had 1 or 2 panels neatly cut out which he would have used for articles, hence the cheap price. Reading through the bundle on the train I found a perfect copy of Whizzer and Chips No1 (sadly no stickers but it also didn't have any bits cut out).
That was a wee treat - And nice knowing it had come from Denis' collection.
