What comics did you buy today?

Very rarely you come across a collector at a carboot selling some or all of his collection.Today at carboot found someone selling dc/marvel comics in plastic bags a £1each.He had three or four large boxes full plus loads spread out on the table.As I have mentioned before I prefer comics with complete stories and so the task was to try and find them in sealed plastic bags.Another thing I was looking for as I flicked through were the ones that stood out.l think I suceeded in both cases here's what I bought.

The last one on the list Secret Wars I got an incomplete series through trying to be clever, because they were all together in the same bag I asked if he would take a £1 for the lot, which he said yes.
Anyway spent £5 altogether and came away buzzing.A Good day.

For the past three weeks I've noticed a box of Victors in Deptford market. They were the later glossy issues from 1991/92 so didn't really interest me but, speaking to my mate Steve on the phone Friday night, he mentioned the final issue was published in 1992 so I had a look yesterday and there it was and I got it for 50p.

I also picked up this book from 1949 for a pound. It contains the famous seal bark cartoon. I got into James Thurber through the "My World and Welcome To It" tv series from around 1969/70.

Meltdown No.1 by Marvel UK. Looks quite good.

A 1946 Dandy Monster Comic has a nasty sticker on the cover and what looks like some spine restoration not by me didn't cost much but the contents are ok and will be used as a donor book for an ever growing restoration project

I've just won a near full year of Judy for 1966. I needed 27 of the 50 so it works out at roughly £4 each. I can always put the other 23 on eBay. As they say up here I'm well chuffed.

Just finished the auction on this lot and I was the highest bidder.

I look forward to getting them and seeing what stories I recognise from other D C Thomson publications. I will also enjoying looking at the spot illustrations and playing Spot The Artist.

I know they are not in the greatest of condition. However, I am looking for reading copies and getting these at less than 30p per issue, then I won't complain at that bargain.

Now, that's an interesting thing you say, Phoenix, as regards your Judy comics. I now have approximately two boxes full of duplicates. Naturally, I would never dream of binning then. I have thought about offloading them to the nearest Salvation Army but I would rather give them away free to someone who would appreciate them as we did when we first read them. Unfortunately, I have no offspring (is that fortunately?) on which to bestow. Does anyone know of any centre that accepts comics for a younger generation that is genuine. I don't want them ripped into shreds even though I have no further use of them.

seriously, first come - first served; at least 200 free comics begging (I just glanced at 2000 AD no. 19) didn't catch my eye!

damn, just realized that my post between my previous two hadn't registered basically, it said that anyone who lives near or around Leeds ( I live in Batley) is welcome to my duplicate comics and undesired copies - comics that bear a newsagent name or have a missing centre spread. I will give them freely. please contact me; I really don't want them. I buy from ebay but I don't sell.

It's a shame I don't live closer Jeff, or I would be able to help you with your quandary.

On a more serious note, have you thought about passing your duplicates to the local children's ward/hospital? I know they would not survive the ravages of being there, but any kid that was in there long term would pick up the comics abd be able to pass an hour or so in a different world.

I say this as I know when I was a kid in the 70's, my life-savers were two annuals that I read over and over again. Admittedly now, every kid has their own TV, iPad and laptop so it is a world away from my time in hospital with beds that looked like they were taken from the set of Carry On Matron!

I like col's idea of a hospital ward for children; will have to make a call. Only problem, there is a long run of "Dracula Lives", I hope they don't frown upon me too much. I also have a few "Action" issues. I could be run out of town!

If anyone else is interested, besides Dracula lives, there are issues of Hotspur, Wizard, Warlord, and Bullet from 1977; various issues of MWOM and Spiderman, numerous issues of Marvel UK's Valour; a good number of Roy of the Rovers from '77. Notably, there are issues of early 2000 ad, no's 5, 11, 14, 19, 20. Number 5 has a page missing, which doesn't affect any of the stories but was enough for me, personally, to eject. Fury comic no.1 is there as well. In addition, an odd few titles: Battle, Tiger and Scorcher, Tarzan Weekly, dr who and big package of US independent comics of which I have no further interest. There are also later issues of 2000 ad and Judge Dredd Megazine; all going begging. Doesn't anybody out there live in Leeds; only 7 miles from Batley.

back to the thread's main subject, I purchased complete fantastic four issue 2 with free model airplane for £29.99 (this ain't included in my freebie offer ) yeah, I know, a helluva price to pay but I've waited 2 years to get this at any price. No.1 with free gift was a doddle, but no. 2 was, seemingly, unattainable. Got it now
