It is interesting to think what would have happened if Charles Griggs drew new Dan for the comic from 1969...

Maybe Dan would have been a two pager in colour earlier in the centre pages..

Anyway maybe not drawing Dan weekly freed him up to do other characters instead so maybe it was for the best and it was great seeing Dudley's Dan reprinted...new to me as a kid..

Yes, Charlie Grigg did draw the occasional Dan page for the weekly. They were used during the run of Dudley Watkins reprints.

Here's a Charlie DAN dated Nov 10, 1970, Peter, which shows that DCT were trying to get artists to emulate Watkins fairly early on after he passed on.

It was a poor scan I done in the first place.....what settings on scan/photoshop do you need for this?

I used PhotoShop Elements, using the convert to Black and White option, and then the Newspaper setting.

I done this one on GIMP, using the colours-threshold feature.

The picture breaks up in zoom-in mode, but scanning in higher-res and blowing up the picture digitally should reap rewards......not bad for a really bad scan in the first place, and I'll be using this approach to scan, print and frame vintage b/w comic strips of 40 years vintage, without the dreaded yellowing.

Greyscale gives a nice black and white image but maybe that's old hat now. I use the same printer on my new laptop but it doesn't have greyscale any more. Those pure black and white scans give it the look of the original artwork

Looking at it more closely I'm dubious that it is Charles Grigg. Doesn't look like his style but its a pretty small image. I have every Dandy from about 1970 to 1972 but they're stashed away in my walk-in cupboard. But I'd like to get them out and scan in some Grigg Dans.

As far as I can see, that is certainly drawn by Charlie Grigg. There are certain giveaways - the way he drew the sheriff and how he landed on his hat etc.

DAN with his closed eyes in frame one is typical Griggesque, but yes, this scan is pretty small.

Here's hoping this baby comes out clearer for you, Peter: there is loss of detail on the bottom left-hand corner, but overall this system is great for brightening up old comics artwork.

Evidently, all folds and shadows have to be eliminated, which has created the deficiency here.....


Great potential in this whitening method, though........
