RAVEN.....if the coloureds were fed on watermelons, this is a darn sight more than JEWISH slaves were 'treated' to more recently under the NAZI regime......

SLAVERY existed in the UK this time last century, as I pointed out quite recently......millions of INDUSTRIAL workers were paid just enough to stop their families from starving, as long as ALL their meagre wages were handed over to the family.

Sure the black people have suffered in history, but millions of UK subjects were systematically slaughtered [for no good reason ] in the 1914-18 war......the system here simply created seperate problems for 'inferior' working classes, millions of who suffered in misery [and were no more happier than the blacks were] from the actions of the same 'elite' who kept the coloureds in slavery.

SLAVERY is still alive and well today......only it's now called 'consumerism'.

I seem to recall some young bellhops in a few 1930s Hollywood movies. Usually messenger boys dressed like that Dandy mascot, but I can't think of a specific example right now.

Sure, but bringing that up doesn't diminish the evils of the slave trade. Two wrongs don't make a right do they?

I'm well aware of the conditions of the working class in the UK's history, ISPYSHHHGUY. But the poverty - or wage slavery - of our white industrial workers wasn't the same as history's racism and black slavery. They weren't lynched, or kept in chains, or forbidden from marrying and raising families, or brutalised in the same way. They were not *literally* slaves with no freedom of movement or rights *whatsoever.*

No, it's still called slavery! It still exists in various forms around the world.

Don't quite get the consumerism point. Excessive consumerism may be considered the source of many woes but you can't really consider the people in today's western consumerist society the same as black slaves in the old plantations, surely?

You have a computer. You buy old Sparkys off Ebay! Have you a DVD player?

If you buy things in excess of your most basic needs then you're a part of the consumerist society yourself.

Ive just found a reprint beano no1 by portfolio editions i think it was released the same time as the first beano book reprint it contains all 28 pages but it is in A5 size and black and white inside apart from the front and back cover and for some strange reason it has a phonecard with it and a poor whoopee mask included

yes, I'm a slave to consumerism, it's true......millions of people [like me] are pursuing pointless materialism, and I am one of them. But I admit it! My telly, [which I no longer watch,] is 15 years out of date.- so I'm not QUITE as bad as some willing 'victims'. Consumer goods are deliberately 'flawed' so we have to keep working to buy new 'improved' goods......I am often too tired after working to enjoy DVDS I buy...........

-----this is systematic madness, that I am part of, and is pre-conditioned slavery that has been passed down since the 50s., on an increasingly agressive scale....this is a real problem,[ that many people do not even realize they are victims of, so ingrained into everyday life now] that is affecting the entire planet, [global warming, companies like EMI actively investing in the ARMS trade] and is now a greater problem than 'traditional' slavery in today's far-from-perfect world.

I still maintain that millions of UK subjects have died for reasons including industrialized, mechanized war [esp. WW1], abject poverty and diseases like TB that were allowed to flourish......people here suffered for very different reasons, with a high mortality rate created by an uncaring system.

The net result was millions of early deaths, the fact that they died for reasons other than 'traditional' slavery was scant comfort for the victims.

hundreds of thousands of people [ millions on all sides] being blown up on a distant battlefield is equally as valid a problem as SLAVERY in all it's forms, in my estimation.

I wholeheartedly condemn the treatment of coloureds during the slave trade, but I just wish people would accept that millions of others [closer to home] were also victims of the same ruling 'elite' who I clearly do NOT support or admire.

sorry about all this 'social history' stuff folks....I will try sticking to the more pressing [and vitally urgent!] topics of comic characters as soon as I can.......

Totally uibnderstand what your trying to say (well not trying what as its what you are actually saying Ispy...' ) but sorry, I personally can't agree in the sense of "slavery" - everyone is a "victim" of consumerism (but in varying degrees as u say your tv isold , mine is a new palsma and I love it as I love tv and pictures etc) but it's just all the worse when added to that (ie consumerism) you're also victimised because of the colour of your skin - still the Beano etc are good diversion - but a good point worth a think!

Just for the record, and without wanting to add fuel to this potential powder-keg of a discussion, in the Cracker Jack story, as printed in the Sunday Post giveaway, his jet-black horse is still called 'Nigger' as per the original.

They could have changed his name to 'Nigel' or something.

A bit of a clanger leaving that bit in but I can see why Thomson's would take out certain things for a reprint intended for general consumption. The aim is presumably and understandably to expose The Beano to a wider audience rather than spark a debate. I've got the a5 size reprint that was mentioned and remember the "black as coal" rhyme from that. I guess that reprint would have a narrower readership though and one that would be more interested in a "warts and all" representation of the issue as a historical document of the time. I suppose the newspaper give-away was intended for novelty value hence the edits.

Regarding the attitudes of the time, like many other forms of popular culture, animation was also peppered with politically incorrect references. In some cases these were subsequently altered with Tom and Jerry cartoons even being overdubbed to give the maid character a non or less "Deep South" accent. Personally I think that's going too far (especially as the character was never specifically identified as a maid). Warner Bros dvd reissues of their classic animations come with a disclaimer to the effect that the films included are unedited, contain representations that are "of their time" and that are left intact for their historical interest. It's a tricky subject but I think their approach is a good one. I wouldn't suggest making a new film like the Bob Clampett one linked to below - on the other hand I'd hate to rewrite history and claim that this one had never existed.

Getting back to the original point, I went to the Sunday Post website and e-mailed them asking if the replica Beano could be put on general sale for around 1.99. A nice man replied to say he'd send me a copy. I e-mailed them on Tuesday or Wednesday and received the facsimile on Saturday. Very pleased. Of course there was a facsimile issued a few years ago that was probably complete. It was just after the DC Thomson's first issues book was published. They probably figured that as the presses were running the reprint for the book they might as well run off some single issues to sell as a stand alone item. It also turned up a couple of years back as a gift advertised in the Sunday Post magazine. It came with some corgi type vintage toy vans that had Beano characters advertised on the sides. Still got the ad somewhere.
